Our Values

In line with our One Coventry Values, we want to ensure that our communities are represented across our workforce. A vital part of this is ensuring we are a truly inclusive organisation that encourages diversity in all respects, including diversity of thinking. We particularly welcome applicants from minority ethnic, LGBT+, disabled and neurodiverse communities to make a real difference to our residents so that equity and respect remains at the heart of everything we do.

Our Values are:

  • Open and fair: We are fair, open, and transparent.
  • Nurture and develop: We help and encourage everyone to be their best and do their best.
  • Engage and empower: We talk and listen to others, working together as one.
  • Create and innovate: We embrace new ways of working to continuously improve.
  • Own and be accountable: We work together to deliver the best services for our residents.
  • Value and respect: We put diversity and inclusion at the heart of all we do.

You will be joining Coventry’s dedicated HMO Enforcement team, a vital part of our Regulatory Services. We are a high-performing, multidisciplinary group focused on ensuring that Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) across the city are safe, well-managed, and legally compliant.

Based in our award-winning One Friargate offices, we embrace a "Digital First" approach and hybrid working. We take pride in being a supportive environment for those at the start of their Environmental Health career; our senior officers are committed to providing the mentorship and diverse caseload you need to achieve CIEH Registered EHO status. In Coventry, you aren't just a number, you are an essential part of a team protecting some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.

What is the job role?

As an Environmental Health Officer, you will be on the frontline of housing regulation. This is an investigative and legal-heavy role where no two days are the same. Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Inspecting: Conducting detailed HHSRS (Housing Health and Safety Rating System) inspections to identify hazards and ensure HMOs meet statutory standards.

  • Regulating: Managing the HMO licensing process, ensuring landlords adhere to their legal obligations and management regulations.

  • Enforcing: Taking a lead on enforcement actions, which may include serving statutory notices, issuing Civil Penalties, gathering evidence for PACE interviews, and preparing cases for prosecution.

  • Advising: Providing expert guidance to landlords, agents, and tenants to promote high standards within Coventry’s private rented sector.

All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for motivated individuals at the entry point of their professional career who are ready to make a tangible impact. We welcome applications from:

  • Those nearing qualification: If you are currently on track to complete a CIEH-accredited BSc or MSc in Environmental Health.

  • Recently qualified professionals: Individuals who have recently obtained their accredited degree and are looking for a structured environment to complete their professional portfolio/logbook.

  • Established Environmental Health Professionals: Experienced and fully qualified officers with a proven track record in Environmental Health who can bring their knowledge, judgement and expertise to a high-performing service.

  • Analytical Communicators: You should have a solid understanding of housing legislation (or the ability to learn it quickly) and the confidence to handle complex conversations with both landlords and tenants.

  • Mobile Professionals: Ideally, you will hold a full UK driving licence. However, we also welcome applications from those currently working towards their licence.
