What will you be doing?

What do you need?

<li>Substantial experience in planning and the application of expert knowledge within a planning policy or development management context.</li>

We are looking for our next apprentice! This is an exciting opportunity to gain a Chartered Town Planner Masters degree whilst working and gaining hands on experience in planning. The post is for three years and for the first two (starting in September 2025) you will attend Brighton University for one day a week to undertake the degree apprentice qualification. In the work place you will have your own workload and undertake a range of planning tasks including assisting with the processing and validation of planning applications, writing reports on different types of applications, and assisting more senior team members in preparing their reports.
As you learn and develop your skills and knowledge you will be able to respond to enquiries from the public, carry out site visits and liaise with colleagues and external agencies. The role will adapt and&nbsp; develop across the three years so you will gain a good knowledge of the work of a planning department.
You will need a higher Second Class degree in an appropriate subject, or an equivalent qualification to be eligible for this apprenticeship and you cannot already have a masters degree. You will need to be accepted on to the course and be ready to start in September 2025.
The job is based at the Civic Centre in Littlehampton and this will be your contractual job location. However, it is likely there will be some working from home and so will need an appropriate space to work from.
Whilst not essential a driving licence/access to a car will help you get the most out of the job as it involves attending site visits, generally starting in the second year.

This is an opportunity for someone who has some planning experience and wants to further their career or for someone who is adept at dealing with householder, minor and other application types but wants to do that in a district with a varied history and landscape.
You will be part of a team that helps to process around 3000 applications, applying planning law and policy and delivering positive outcomes for our communities and businesses.
What will you be doing?
<ul>
<li>Preparing planning reports on development proposals.</li>
<li>Providing advice and conducting negotiations with applicants to achieve the best possible outcomes and deliver 5-star customer service.</li>
<li>Liaising with various stakeholders, including residents, officers from other service sections, elected members, and external bodies to ensure material consideration are taken into account and that decision making is open and transparent.</li>
<li>Engaging in pre-application discussions, taking opportunities to front load planning considerations and make the formal planning application process run smoothly.</li>
</ul>
What do you need?
<ul>
<li>Experience in planning and the application of expert knowledge within a planning policy or development management context.</li>
<li>Customer service skills, being particularly adept at speaking with those who have conflicting demands and priorities.</li>
<li>Knowledge of relevant law, policy and guidance related to planning and related matters.</li>
<li>Communication and negotiation skills being able to discuss proposals in a positive, constructive, and professional manner to deliver positive planning outcomes.</li>
<li>A planning or relevant degree qualification or, as an alternative, considerable experience in planning matters.</li>

The Planning Policy team sits within the Climate, Planning &amp; Transport Service, and, through the development of positive, innovative planning policy and guidance, plays in an instrumental role in delivering the priorities and ambitions of the Borough Plan. You will play a key role in improving and streamlining our data collection and analysis processes, and communicating the successes, opportunities, and challenges that Lambeth faces in delivering on its development targets. You will be outward-looking and able to work well with colleagues across planning, regeneration and the wider council, as well as with external stakeholders and residents. Beyond your monitoring role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the policy work of the team, assisting with consultations, responses to national and regional policy changes, and policy development, and this role would be an excellent opportunity to enhance your skills and expand your experience within the planning sector.
