Job Introduction

This is an exciting opportunity to join Staffordshire County Council’s Occupational Health team as an Occupational Health Nurse, supporting the health, safety and wellbeing of our workforce and the wider services we support.

Working as part of the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Service within People Services, you will play an important role in helping employees remain well, safe and supported at work, while providing managers with clear, professional and practical occupational health advice.

The role offers a varied and rewarding caseload, including management referrals, health surveillance, wellbeing and Safe and Well assessments, and advice on fitness for work, workplace adjustments and return-to-work arrangements.

You will work closely with managers, People Services colleagues, Health and Safety Advisors and other professionals to support positive outcomes for employees and help contribute to a healthy, safe and effective working environment.

We are looking for someone who brings strong clinical judgement, compassion and confidence, and who is motivated by making a meaningful difference to people’s working lives. In return, you will be supported to develop your occupational health practice within a collaborative local authority environment, with opportunities to learn from complex casework, contribute to service improvement and help shape a proactive approach to employee wellbeing.

Main Responsibilities

You will:

  • Play a key role in delivering a high-quality Occupational Health service, providing clinical assessment, professional advice and support to managers, employees and wider colleagues.
  • Support effective absence management, promote employee health and wellbeing, and help ensure safe working arrangements across the organisation.
  • Undertake management referrals, health surveillance, wellbeing assessments and other clinical activity in line with good clinical practice.
  • Provide clear, professional Occupational Health advice to managers to support attendance, fitness for work, workplace adjustments and safe return-to-work arrangements.
  • Prepare accurate and timely reports, nursing notes and confidential health records to support effective decision-making and case management.
  • Identify health conditions that may have occupational significance and provide practical guidance on job modification or workplace adjustments where required.
  • Undertake Safe and Well assessments as part of our innovative short term absence support arrangements.
  • Work collaboratively with managers, People Services, Health and Safety Advisors and other professionals to deliver a responsive and effective Occupational Health service.
  • Support preventative health programmes, including health questionnaires, audiometry, vision screening, lung function testing and other health surveillance requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies that promote a fit, healthy and safe workforce and support the reduction of sickness absence.
  • Act as a professional source of Occupational Health advice on issues such as sickness absence, injury absence, immunisation, pregnancy at work, infection control and communicable diseases.
  • Maintain professional standards in line with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and ensure continuous NMC registration.
The Ideal Candidate

You will be:

  • a skilled and compassionate Occupational Health Nurse who can combine strong clinical judgement with excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • be confident in providing clear, practical and balanced occupational health advice, while recognising the importance of supporting employees and managers with sensitivity, professionalism and respect.

We would like you to:

  • hold a nursing diploma or degree and relevant experience in occupational health
  • be professionally accountable for the delivery of standards of professional practice and behaviours as set by the Nursing & Midwifery Council
  • have excellent communication skills
  • be able to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals.
  • have mental health experience/training preferably but not essential

We are committed to supporting your professional development and helping you to thrive in the role.

You will be part of a supportive Health, Safety and Wellbeing Service, working alongside experienced colleagues and wider People Services teams to build strong professional relationships and develop your understanding of occupational health within a local authority setting..

Interviews will be held after the 10th August 2026.
