Role Purpose

BCP Council is seeking an Apprentice Public Health Analyst to join its Public Health and Communities team. This role supports our dedicated public health function focused on:

  • Promoting community well-being
  • Tackling health inequalities, and
  • Improving health outcomes across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole

We’re looking for a motivated, driven individual with a real passion for public health and a desire to make a difference. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape healthier communities across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole. As an Apprentice Public Health Analyst, you’ll play an important role in strengthening how we use data and insight to improve services. Working with partners and local communities, you’ll help turn intelligence into action—supporting better decisions, better services, and better outcomes for residents.

Alongside this work, you will be given the opportunity to undertake a Level 7 Health and Care Intelligence Specialist Apprenticeship. This will be a 22-month course with funding handled by the local authority for a 3-year fixed term contract. This course will provide you with new learning and skills to be able to lead on analytical projects within Public Health and Population Health and train you for senior analytical roles in the future.

BCP Council has a bold vision of building sustainable, safe, and healthy communities where people, nature, the coast, and our towns thrive together in harmony. As the tenth largest urban local authority in England, we serve vibrant and diverse communities that are central to everything we do. Our corporate priorities are guided by a strong commitment to putting people first.

The Public Health function at BCP Council is centered on the communities that make up the Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole area. Our focus is on building capability and independence within communities, reducing health inequalities, improving health outcomes for children and young people, and creating healthy environments. We take a community-centered approach to health and wellbeing, ensuring that local voices shape the services and support we provide.

The BCP Public Health & Communities team is based at the Civic Centre in Bournemouth, and we actively support agile and hybrid working through the use of online technology. Flexible working arrangements are also supported where possible. There is an expectation to work within the BCP area to build strong relationships with colleagues and partners, and team members are required to attend in-person meetings at least once a week.

This Level 7 Master’s degree apprenticeship is ideal for early-career professionals who are passionate about using data and analytics to understand population health needs and inform evidence-based decision-making.

Main Responsibilities

Your work will contribute to evidence-based decision-making and service improvement through a range of responsibilities, including:

  • Assessing population health needs, reviewing and generating evidence to inform strategy and planning
  • Supporting service evaluation and promoting best practice in data collection, analysis, and use
  • Design, own, maintain and develop reports, dashboards, databases and webpages
  • Providing professional statistical advice, translating complex data into clear insights for non-technical audiences
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) and other health needs assessments
  • Enhancing analytical capacity within BCP Council by supporting training, knowledge sharing, and the dissemination of intelligence

When you're not engaged in formal learning with JGA Group, you'll be gaining hands-on experience as part of the Public Health Intelligence team at BCP Council. This on-the-job learning will allow you to apply your academic knowledge in a real-world setting, contributing to meaningful public health and community development work. Throughout the apprenticeship, you’ll be supported by:

  • A dedicated tutor from JGA Group, who will conduct regular progress reviews to ensure you're on track and satisfied with your learning experience
  • Workplace mentorship and supervision, including regular one-to-one meetings to agree on a work plan and prioritise tasks that align with both the apprenticeship standards and the needs of the organisation.

The Ideal Candidate

Offers will be conditional on successful enrolment onto the Level 7 course, so it is important that you read the eligibility requirements carefully before applying.

To be eligible, you must have:

  • GCSE Grade C/4 (or equivalent Functional Skills Level 2) in English and Mathematics;

And at least one of the following:

  • an undergraduate degree in a social science subject such as Psychology, Geography or Economics, including research methods and/or statistics and quantitative modules, plus a dissertation with a research or data analysis component;
  • a Level 4 or higher qualification in STEM or a related field with substantial mathematical content, such as computing, engineering or science;
  • professional registration with FEDIP through the Association of Healthcare Analysts (AphA) at Practitioner or Senior Practitioner level;
  • or equivalent analytical work experience in a Band 6/7 equivalent analyst role.

To help applicants decide whether this opportunity is right for them, please note that you may be ineligible for this post if:

  • you do not meet the apprenticeship entry requirements, or you would be unable to enrol on the Level 7 Health & Care Intelligence Specialist Apprenticeship that starts on Monday 12th October 2026. You must be available to enrol on this date otherwise you will be ineligible;
  • you already hold a public health or analytics related degree or masters;
  • you are educated above master’s degree level;
  • you do not have the right to work in the UK – this post is not eligible for a student visa or sponsorship. You must have resided in the UK for the past three years.

If this opportunity sparks your interest, and you think you might be the person we are looking for, we would be delighted to hear from you. Interviews are likely to be held on the week beginning 17th August 2026. To arrange an informal discussion with the Senior Analyst, Lee Robertson, please contact lee.robertson2@bcpcouncil.gov.uk
