Job Introduction

About Us

The Registration Service plays a pivotal role in key life events for members of our local communities. It provides residents with a service to register births, deaths, stillbirths, marriages and civil partnerships and is offered across seven registration offices in the county of Oxfordshire. The Registration Service team are committed to making a real difference in local people's lives, and to providing the best outcomes for our customers. We are a supportive and inclusive team, and we aim to deliver our service by living the organisation's values: always learning, being kind, acting with integrity, taking responsibility, and daring to do things differently.

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated, well organised and compassionate person to join the Oxfordshire Registration Service as a casual Registration Officer. This is a ‘zero hours’ contract in which you will provide cover during periods of peak demand, annual leave, illness or training. There is no guaranteed number of hours per month. Your work base will be the Oxford Register Office, but you will be required to work in any of the registration offices located in Oxfordshire, so the ability to travel independently is required. In this role, you will spend the majority of your time interviewing customers in face-to-face appointments, registering life events (births, deaths, and stillbirths), and taking Notices of Marriage and Civil Partnership.

This is a very busy and varied role in which you will be meeting customers who have individual needs and circumstances, may display a range of emotions and who may have complex and challenging situations. It offers the opportunity to provide excellent service and support at important moments in customers' lives and to ensure that they are able to complete the required procedures within statutory frameworks and timescales. You will work in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment with back-to-back appointments every 30-45 minutes.

About you

As a Registration Officer, you will enjoy engaging with members of the public at pivotal times and guiding them through a legal process. You will be able to apply complex regulations and principles and explain them in a way which is readily understandable by the general public. You will be confident in your ICT skills (training will be given in Registration software) and willing to use your initiative in combination with guidance from experienced Registration Officers, to solve problems and achieve the required outcome for customers. You will also need to be flexible as situations and places of work may change at relatively short notice. You will be thorough and careful when carrying out daily checks on certificates and finance records.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Mary Horan (mary.horan@oxfordshire.gov.uk) or Jacqui Sanderson (jacqui.sanderson@oxfordshire.gov.uk)

Interviews will take place in person on Thursday 13 August 2026 at the Oxford Register Office; the start date for the role is expected to be late September or early October 2026. If you have applied for this role in the past 6 months, please do not reapply.

The vacancy may close early if sufficient applications are received.

Rewards and benefits

  • Competitive salary

  • Competitive employer contribution pension scheme
  • Local and national discounts for shopping and travel
  • Excellent learning and development opportunities
