Social Care
£38,090 per year

The starting salary for this role is £38,090 per annum based on a 36-hour working week. The role is fixed term up until March 2029.

We are looking for up to 9 people to join our new WorkWell team in Surrey County Council as Employment and Health Coaches, delivering person-centred support to help people overcome health barriers that are affecting their ability to work.

The role is community based with substantial travel across Surrey to meet programme participants and employers. As part of the role, you will work with participants in community locations such as libraries and health centres. You will also be expected to attend the office one day a week in Woodhatch Place, Reigate (usually Tuesday). The post reports directly into the WorkWell Team Leader and you will be expected to work horizontally across the wider Economy & Growth function of over 80 people.

Our Offer to You

  • Option to buy up to 10 days of additional annual leave
  • A generous local government salary related pension
  • Up to 5 days of carer's leave and 2 paid volunteering days per year
  • Paternity, adoption and dependents leave
  • An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to support health and wellbeing

  • Wellbeing and lifestyle discounts including gym, travel, and shopping
  • A chance to make a real difference to the lives of our residents

About Economy and Growth

The Economy and Growth function focuses on growing Surrey's economy, working as 'One Council' to create a sustainable economy and ensure no one is left behind. We provide strategic leadership and direct delivery of services in business support, innovation, skills and places for the benefit of Surrey's 110,000 businesses and 1.2 million residents.

We collaborate with partners and major employers including Amazon, Asahi, WWF-UK, Samsung and McLaren to champion and futureproof Surrey's leading regional economy, home to key strategic businesses contributing £50 billion annually to the UK economy.

We have a highly skilled workforce, respected educational and research institutions, and an enviable location. We are home to world-leading sectors including creative industries, cybersecurity, gaming and health, which we are proud to champion and support.

Supporting residents into good, sustainable work is a key priority for the Economy and Growth team and supports our wider objectives of driving sustainable economic growth across Surrey. WorkWell is a key element of our Get Surrey Working plan and forms part of a broader portfolio of programmes addressing skills gaps, responding to employer needs and supporting local growth.

We are committed to the cross-team consolidation of activity across our area of work, and the integration of programmes both with each other and across the wider team is a fundamental principle of how we operate. By working collaboratively across services and with external partners, we deliver seamless employment and skills support through a single, coherent front door for residents, businesses and employers.

About the Role

WorkWell is a national programme, delivered locally by Surrey County Council, that helps people with disabilities or health-related barriers to enter, return to or stay in employment. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dedicated team committed to delivering positive outcomes for Surrey residents and businesses by helping people overcome barriers that prevent them from working.

As an Employment and Health Coach, you will play a crucial role in the delivery of WorkWell. You will manage a caseload of up to 30 participants and be responsible for supporting individuals to develop personalised plans that help them manage their health condition or disability and achieve their employment goals. You will have targets relating to the number of participants you support and the outcomes achieved.

Using motivational interviewing and coaching techniques, you will provide one-to-one support to improve participants' wellbeing, confidence, self-management and readiness for work. You will empower individuals to build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to manage their own health and wellbeing and make sustainable progress towards employment.

You will work closely with professionals from health, community and other support services to ensure participants have access to the right interventions and support. You will also take a lead role in building and maintaining relationships with partner organisations and services, helping to create a joined-up approach that delivers the best possible outcomes for residents.

The role is community-based and involves supporting participants in a range of locations across Surrey. You will therefore be required to travel across the county as needed. Please note that, as a community-based position, this role is not suitable for home working.

Your application

In order to be considered for shortlisting, your application will clearly evidence the following skills and align with our behaviours:

  • Experience of providing support to participants using a coaching framework, preferably within a health and/or supported employment setting, using a person-centred and holistic approach.
  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively with a range of services, to navigate and coordinate the best sources of support and to ensure this is tailored to a person’s needs.
  • The ability to provide effective advice and guidance to support someone to return to, start in, or stay in work, preferably with reference to managing health related conditions or disabilities.
  • The ability to use case management systems (or similar) to effectively manage participant information and records

To apply, please send a copy of your CV and outline your experience and suitability for the role responding to these three questions:

  1. Outline your experience of providing advice and guidance to people, within a person-centred coaching framework, and how you ensured people were motivated to work with the support.
  2. Outline your experience of navigating complex systems on behalf of people who need support, and how you ensured that this was effective to meet their needs.
  3. Please describe how you have worked alongside other support services (such as community or health services) to deliver successful outcomes for a participant and how you have recorded and evidenced this success.

An enhanced DBS ‘Disclosure and Barring Service’ check for regulated activity (formerly known as CRB) and the Children’s and Adults’ Barred List checks will be required for this role.

Before submitting your application, we recommend you read the job description & Our Life at Surrey handbook to get an insight into working at Surrey.

The job advert closes on 9 August, but we reserve the right to close early if we receive a large number of applications. Interviews will be in person in our Reigate office and will take place around a week after the advert closes.

We look forward to receiving your application, please click on the apply online button below to submit.
