Are you looking for a career where you can make a real difference to local residents and businesses on the Isle of Wight? No two days are ever the same in Trading Standards with the work we carry out being varied and interesting. You could be investigating a rogue trader carrying out substandard work, ensuring that children aren’t supplied age restricted products, or tackling illicit vapes & tobacco. In addition, you will provide advice to businesses across the full range of Trading Standards legislation, along with tackling unsafe and counterfeit products or assisting a victim who may have lost thousands of pounds to a scam. You may also need to visit a farm for animal health & welfare and feed standards or perhaps inspect retailers for weights and measures compliance to ensure consumers are not suffering detriment for those everyday essentials we rely heavily on. As you can see, we cover a wide range of responsibilities with approximately 250 separate laws to enforce.

We’re looking for a fully qualified Trading Standards Inspector holding a recognised qualification from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (DTS/DCATS or equivalent) including the statutory qualification to act as an Inspector of Weights and Measures.

If you don’t hold the qualification we’re looking for, we are keen to consider applications to embark on our career grade to commence your career with us where you will be fully supported on the new Level 6 Trading Standards Practitioner apprenticeship to achieve the full qualification.

Currently, you will also be required to complete other statutory elements with the Chartered Trading Standards Institute as part of the qualification process.

This is a fantastic opportunity and to succeed in this position you will need to be an enthusiastic and self-motivated team player committed to delivering advice, inspections and enforcement to a high standard including attending the Magistrates and Crown Courts as required. Our work is via local, regional and national initiatives based on complaints and intelligence available to us. Effective communication skills with the ability to build rapport and relationships will be essential to talk with a wide range of consumers, businesses, colleagues and other agencies. Previous enforcement experience and/or transferrable skills that you can bring to us would be advantageous.

We operate flexible working arrangements where agile working is encouraged and supported which includes some working from home. A full driving licence and use of a car is essential.
