About the role

We are looking for a motivated and reliable Street Cleansing Light / Medium Goods Vehicle Driver to help keep our streets, parks, and public spaces clean, safe, and attractive for residents and visitors.

This is a varied, hands-on role that combines driving duties with street cleansing and environmental maintenance activities. You will be part of a dedicated team delivering high-quality frontline services across the borough.

What will you be doing?

As a Street Cleansing Driver, you will be responsible for driving allocated vehicles and carrying out a range of cleansing and environmental tasks to meet operational targets and service standards.

Key duties include:

  • Driving light and medium goods vehicles safely and responsibly.
  • Collecting litter and cleansing streets, footpaths, and public spaces.
  • Emptying litter bins and dog waste bins.
  • Removing fly-tipped waste, graffiti, fly posting, and dead animals.
  • Carrying out routine vehicle inspections and maintenance checks.
  • Operating and maintaining equipment, tools, and plant in accordance with procedures.
  • Reporting defects and ensuring vehicles are kept clean and serviceable.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues to deliver an effective and efficient service.
  • Engaging positively with residents and members of the public.
  • Supporting environmental enforcement investigations by identifying evidence and, where required, providing witness statements and attending court proceedings.
  • Following all health and safety procedures, risk assessments, and safe working practices.
  • Representing the Council professionally at all times.

About you

For this role you will need:


  • Experience of working in an outdoor environment and of undertaking a range of manual tasks.
  • Two years driving experience.

    Full UK driving licence including categories B, C1, BE C1+E

  • Understanding of Health and Safety systems including manual handling and risk assessments.

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weathers.

  • Ability to walk, bend, kneel and stand for long periods of time and perform heavy lifting if needed.
  • Positive attitude to a physically demanding role.
  • Ability to work in solo or in a team environment.
  • Flexibility and willingness to be involved in all aspects of the operation of the street cleansing service.
  • Able to work well unsupervised, manage time effectively and be self-motivated.
