Travel training is a rewarding role which involves teaching children and young people how to travel to school independently. This typically involves training individuals how to plan journeys, cross roads safely, remain safe in public, and deal with any problems / unexpected situations which occur. This training provides children and young people with the necessary skills to travel independently which also positively influences many other aspects of their lives. It also means that these young people do not have to rely on adults in their families to transport them to different places and opportunities.

The majority of the people we train will have some form of special educational needs and/or disabilities. Travel trainers should have some experience working with children and young people with SEND and should be able to demonstrate how to make the use of public transport seem less daunting for these individuals.

About the role:

The role involves strong communication skills as it will be required for travel trainers to communicate frequently with young people, their parents and key adults in schools to keep all parties updated about the trainee’s progress.

Travel training sessions could take place from around 07:30 in the mornings and could go on to around 16:30 in the afternoons – though these times vary based on the distance from the trainee’s home to their school/college. The role can be physically demanding at times – usually if a trainee’s route involves long walks or travel uphill.
