About the team
The Hertfordshire Inclusion Teaching Service (HITS) supports children and young people who are unable to attend school due to a range of SEND, medical, emotional or complex needs. Our purpose is to ensure every child remains engaged in learning, rebuilds confidence and is supported to reintegrate successfully back into education.
HITS provides a flexible model of education that includes community learning, online provision and group sessions at HITS centres.
As a HITS teacher, you will collaborate with the Senior Teachers, Reintegration Education Officers, schools and families and wider professionals to help remove barriers to school attendance and guide students back into learning. You will be joining a caring, child-centred team where staff work together to make a real difference.
About the role
As a HITS Teacher, your key responsibilities will be to:
- Deliver high‑quality teaching to learners with SEND, health needs or other complex barriers, using a mix of face‑to‑face, home‑based and online approaches.
- Teach your specialist subject (English, Maths or Science) to pupils in Key Stages 3 and 4, adapting learning based on assessment and individual need.
- Plan, deliver and review personalised learning programmes, monitoring progress, engagement and readiness for reintegration.
- Support pupils to reintegrate into school or transition to an appropriate long‑term educational pathway.
- Maintain safe, inclusive and safeguarding‑compliant practice, and lead Planning & Review reintegration meetings with families, schools and professionals.
About you
Essential:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a degree and at least five years’ successful teaching experience in English or Maths, including recent classroom practice.
- Strong subject knowledge with the ability to adapt teaching for individual needs, including pupils with SEND or health‑related barriers to attendance.
- Demonstrable high‑quality teaching and learning practice, with the ability to evaluate impact, model excellent practice and contribute to curriculum planning.
- Excellent communication skills, strong ICT confidence, and the ability to work effectively within a multi‑professional team.
- Commitment to inclusive education, equality, diversity, pastoral care and pupil wellbeing.
- Flexibility to teach online, face‑to‑face or via blended delivery, depending on pupil needs, with up‑to‑date knowledge of exam specifications and requirements.
- Full UK Driving Licence and regular access to a vehicle
Desirable:
- Experience supporting pupils unable to attend school.
- Additional SEND qualifications.
- Trauma‑informed or restorative practice experience.
