About the job

Salary: £39,152 - £41,771 a year
Hours per week: 37
Contract type: Permanent

As a Teacher Practitioner at Luton Borough Council, you will plan, deliver and evaluate high-quality teaching and learning for adult learners, and in some cases apprentices. We are keen to expand our ICT, Functional Skills and business related teaching team.

Using approved planning tools such as schemes of work, session plans, individual learning plans and practitioner reviews, you will ensure learning is structured, inclusive and responsive to individual needs.

You will apply a wide range of teaching, learning and assessment strategies to meet the diverse needs of the community and achieve organisational targets. You will be accountable for effective course administration, including registers, monitoring attendance patterns, learner reports and maintaining accurate statistical and tracking information.

The role involves undertaking all associated academic and administrative tasks, such as lesson planning, assessment, student tracking and course-related duties, to ensure effective curriculum delivery and accurate course planning. You will contribute to the development and adaptation of learning resources to support individual learners and promote positive outcomes.

You will play an active role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of provision by participating in service reviews, self-assessment, evaluation and wider quality assurance processes. Continuous professional development is a key part of the role, including maintaining up-to-date subject knowledge, enhancing teaching practice and attending meetings to share good practice.

Working collaboratively as part of a team, you will support quality standardisation, moderation, verification and preparation for external verification activities. You will assist colleagues who are new to the service or who require additional support and may take part in the service’s mentoring programme.

The role also requires flexibility to provide cover for absent colleagues when needed and to contribute to the promotion of the service. You will work in line with all relevant policies and procedures, including Sustainability, Health & Safety, Safeguarding and Safer Recruitment, and Equality and Diversity.

You will undertake any other reasonable duties appropriate to the grade of the post to support the effective delivery of the service.

Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.

About you

You are an enthusiastic and committed teaching professional with demonstrable experience of working with adults and/or young people in a teaching or training role. You have experience of managing learning programmes to a high standard, including the preparation of schemes of work and session plans that support effective learning and progression.

You are able to communicate confidently with adult learners, showing empathy, understanding and a learner-centred approach. You are confident in using Information Learning Technology (ILT) to enhance learning opportunities and support engagement and achievement.

You have a strong understanding of quality assurance processes and the importance of monitoring all stages of the learner journey in order to continuously improve teaching and learning. You demonstrate a sound understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion, and how these impact adult learning within the community.

You possess demonstrable knowledge and practical application of your specialist curriculum area, including an understanding of the range of qualifications available for adult learners within your specialism. You are able to embed English, maths and IT (digital skills) effectively within learning programmes to support learner development and progression.

You have a clear understanding of safeguarding and are committed to creating and maintaining a safe, supportive learning environment for all learners.

You hold a minimum Level 4 teaching qualification (or are working towards this) and a minimum Level 3 qualification in your area of specialism, or a relevant qualification at least one level higher than the level you will be teaching (whichever is higher). You also hold a minimum Level 2 qualification in English and maths, or are willing to work towards this.

You are flexible and able to work at agreed locations across the Borough at various times to meet the needs of the service, including evenings and occasional weekends.

Application Process

Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore applicants are required to declare all unspent cautions and convictions; and also any adult cautions (simple or conditional), and spent convictions that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2020). A person’s criminal record will not in itself prevent a person from being appointed to this post. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.

On occasions, we may close a vacancy early due to a very high number of applications being received.
