
Streetpride Skilled Operative
The Streetpride Service is Coventry City Council's Street Cleansing and Grounds Maintenance Service. It has a responsibility and statutory duty to keep the City clean, green, and attractive for all.
Keeping the City clean and green is a huge challenge, and one we cannot do on our own. The service is delivered by a flexible, locally committed workforce who work well with different residents, communities, and partners, ensuring a One Coventry approach by enabling people to do more for themselves.
The service operates out of 3 strategically based sites in the City and provides a cleansing service 7 days per week for 52 weeks of the year.
We currently clean 10’000 miles of road network each year and empty over 3’000 street litter bins each week.
The service is also responsible for delivering the Grounds Maintenance works across all our Parks and Open Spaces, including our 5 Green Flag Parks and cuts approximately 6 million square metres of grass every 20 working days. That is the equivalent of cutting one thousand football pitches.

Coventry City Council is looking for a committed Streetpride Skilled Operative to help keep our city clean, green and welcoming. The role is working within one of our area based grounds maintenance teams.
This is a hands‑on, citywide role where no two days are the same — perfect for someone who enjoys working outdoors, operating machinery, and taking pride in improving local neighbourhoods.
What you’ll do
- Help keep parks, open spaces and highway verges looking their best through high‑quality grass cutting, hedge pruning and horticultural maintenance
- Operate a variety of vehicles and machinery, including ride‑on mowers
- Apply weedkillers and chemicals safely in line with PA1/PA6 requirements
- Clear litter, debris and graffiti to maintain clean and welcoming public spaces
- Lead and direct a small team to ensure work is completed to a high standard
- Use handheld devices to record and update daily work tasks
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions

The successful candidate will be someone who:
- A high level of reliability, commitment and a consistently professional approach to all duties.
- Brings a positive, professional attitude and is willing to take on all tasks within the role and service area.
- Demonstrates proven capability in leading, motivating and directing staff to ensure consistently high standards of service delivery.
- Knows their horticulture — with strong experience in planting, pruning, grass cutting and wider grounds maintenance.
- Experience in chemical control, including the safe application of herbicides in accordance with approved procedures and Health & Safety requirements, and the ability to supervise staff undertaking basic chemical application.
- Can operate a wide range of powered hand tools (hedge cutters, pedestrian mowers, etc.) and is happy to show others how to use them.
- Understands Health & Safety inside out, including correct PPE and safe working practices.
- The physical capability to undertake a variety of labour‑intensive tasks involving bending, pulling and lifting in all weather conditions.
- Has a customer‑focused mindset, staying calm, respectful and polite even when dealing with challenging situations.
- Knows how to take the right action at the right time to prevent issues escalating into formal complaints.
- Holds a full, valid Category B manual driving licence

Salary range
- £25,989 - £29,540 per year
