The Role
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Stop Smoking Advisor to join our Stop Smoking Service. The Smokefree North Somerset Team are responsible for supporting people who smoke, to stop smoking for good. Our aim is to reduce smoking prevalence in North Somerset to less than 5% by 2030, helping smokers to live healthier, happier lives.
In this role, you will be required to carry out a range of activities including supporting clients to stop smoking via telephone support, video chat or face to face support sessions, maintaining accurate, up-to-date records on the services’ case management system, recommending and issuing smoking cessation pharmacotherapy adhering to current national and local guidelines, procedures and policies with limited supervision. The role will require a broad knowledge and understanding of smoking cessation, behaviour change methods, and smoking cessation pharmacotherapy. The post holder will provide advice and respond to queries from clients, prospective clients and professionals escalating more complex queries to others within the team ie the Lead Specialist Advisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Hold a caseload of clients, providing ongoing support inline with the National centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT) Standard Treatment Programme, supporting and motivating clients to achieve a smokefree future.
- Plan and deliver smoking cessation advice and support sessions either online, via telephone or in face-to-face clinics and drop-ins, providing advice on stop smoking medications, working within recommended protocols and guidelines.
- Communicate with colleagues and partner agencies to establish referral routes into the service, from groups with poorer health outcomes, those experiencing health inequalities, including from areas in North Somerset with the highest levels of multiple deprivation.
- To be involved in monitoring and evaluation of attendance at smokefree support sessions and contribute to the completion of the minimum data set requirement. This will include following up quitters who do not attend for planned support.
- To support marketing and promotion of the service including attendance at community events.
This position is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.
Work Style
At North Somerset Council, we offer a hybrid working environment based on four distinct work styles. Depending on the role and personal circumstances, you will fall into one of these categories. However, please note that during the induction period, it may be necessary to spend more time in the office to support your learning and development. We are flexible and open to discussions about your preferred working style, and if you wish to be in the office more frequently, this can be negotiated.
This role falls into the category of Mobile/Field Worker which means you can expect to work in the following way:
- 0-1 day in the office
- Includes field workers who primarily work remotely.
- Comes into the office for meetings or focused work. Virtual connections with the team are essential, with portable technology supporting work on the go.
About You
We are looking for an individual who is passionate about supporting people to make positive changes to their lives through stopping smoking, and who possesses the following skills and experience:
Essential Criteria:
- Ability to engage with service users using a person centred empathetic non-judgemental approach, motivating, and supporting individuals to change their behaviour.
- NVQ level 2 in literacy and numeracy
- Competent in the use of computer software packages including Microsoft Word and email software.
Desirable Criteria:
- Significant experience of supporting smokers to stop smoking or other areas of behaviour change particularly with service users from disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Experience of organising and facilitating groups in a range of settings.
- Experience of partnership working across agencies.
- Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding protocols and the threshold levels for service users’ groups.
- Experience using case management systems for recording service users and/or patient details and details of interactions.
- Awareness and general understanding of the harms of tobacco smoking, relevant local and national policies, aims and legislation on smoking and smoking cessation.
- Level 2 Stop Smoking Advisor Qualification or willing to work towards this.
