Transport Projects Team

Help Shape the Future of Sheffield’s Transport Network

Sheffield is at the heart of South Yorkshire's economy, driving investment, innovation and growth across the wider region. With a newly adopted 10 year Growth Plan and significant investment in infrastructure and regeneration, now is a pivotal time to join Sheffield City Council. One of the key priorities is creating "A City on the Move", improving connectivity, supporting economic growth and delivering sustainable transport solutions for the future.

As part of this transformation, Sheffield City Council is investing in its transport infrastructure to build a safe, reliable, and low-carbon network fit for the future. Our ambitious Connecting Sheffield projects aim to provide more choice for people travelling by public transport, on foot, or by bike — creating a healthier, greener city for all.

About the Role

To help deliver this vision, we’re looking for a Senior Technician to join our Transport Projects Team. The role will involve:

  • Production of traffic engineering designs, road safety schemes, and junction/crossing layouts using software such as AutoCAD.
  • Interpretation of traffic flow data, cycle counts, accident/collision statistics, and queue-length surveys.
  • Ensuring all works comply with appropriate UK design standards and legislation.

We need a creative and committed professional with a solid background in transport projects and traffic engineering disciplines to join an established team of multi-disciplinary engineers. You’ll play a key role in developing concept solutions for projects in often constrained and complex environments, with a strong emphasis on active travel, public transport improvements, and road safety schemes.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience of working on the concept design/feasibility of a range of transport and traffic engineering projects.
  • Ability to develop innovative and practical infrastructure solutions using software packages such as AutoCAD.
  • A good knowledge of current design standards.
  • Good communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A collaborative approach, working alongside Senior Engineers, internal and external partners.

You’ll primarily be involved in concept design/feasibility for small scale projects but there will be the opportunity to work on bigger projects across the City.

Why Sheffield?

This is a city of change — ambitious, creative, diverse, and community-driven. From its unique geography to its thriving cultural scene, Sheffield offers an environment that’s as rewarding to work in as it is to live in.

This is a chance to join a team delivering over £100m of transport investment and play a key role in Sheffield's ongoing transformation.

Unlike many private sector opportunities, Sheffield City Council offers:

Meaningful, city shaping work with lasting public impact

Flexible and hybrid working arrangements

Excellent work life balance

A highly competitive Local Government Pension Scheme

Generous annual leave

Professional development and career progression opportunities

A supportive, collaborative and ambitious team culture.

If you’re passionate about transportation, sustainability, and shaping the future of one of the UK’s most exciting cities, we want to hear from you.

Further details about the responsibilities and requirements of the role are contained in the job role summary and job profile.

It is anticipated that interviews will take place during the week commencing 14th December 2026.
