About the Role
As a Senior Public Health Officer, you will play a pivotal role in delivering our ambitious Housing Strategy and work as part of a team to meet the ambition that every resident lives in a healthy home. You’ll collaborate with partners across the borough—including Strategic Housing, Public Health, Berneslai Homes (our arms-length management organisation), the NHS, and a wide range of statutory, community, and voluntary groups—to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for all. You will use your skills and experience to influence the wider determinants of health and embed public health approaches in everyday service planning and delivery
Focusing on early intervention and prevention, your portfolio will be broad, covering all housing tenures. You’ll lead the planning and delivery of public health programmes and initiatives that support residents to live in healthy, affordable, and secure homes. You may also manage contracts, engage stakeholders, and conduct research and evaluation to reduce inequalities and create a Healthy Barnsley.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, plan, and deliver public health programmes to address the causes of poor housing conditions and tackle health inequalities across Barnsley.
- Work in close partnership with colleagues across the council, NHS, Berneslai Homes, and community/voluntary groups.
- Commission, manage, and evaluate projects and contracts that support healthy, sustainable neighbourhoods.
- Engage stakeholders and facilitate collaborative working to achieve shared goals.
- Develop and implement public health strategies and plans, engaging stakeholders and aligning actions across services and agencies
- Conduct research and evaluation to inform policy and practice.
- Support the delivery of the Housing Strategy and contribute to wider public health objectives.
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking a passionate and experienced public health officer who understands the vital role housing plays as a wider determinant of health. You’ll have:
- A relevant degree (e.g., Public Health, Housing, Social Policy, or related field).
- Proven experience in collaborative working and delivering successful public health initiatives.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience in project management and evaluation.
- A track record of reducing inequalities and improving health and wellbeing outcomes.
- Contribute to policy, guidance, and strategy development, ensuring alignment with local and national priorities.
- Keen interest in improving housing conditions and improving health and wellbeing.
- Commitment to professional development and continuous improvement.

Salary range
- £42,839 - £46,142 per year
