This is a rewarding opportunity to develop your leadership skills and maintain professional competence whilst making a real impact on public health across the borough.

You will be joining an experienced, dynamic, multi‑skilled team whose work spans a wide range of areas, including food safety, health and safety, infectious disease control, skin‑piercing registrations and animal licensing. No two days are the same, and your expertise will help shape safer, healthier communities.

What We’re Looking For

You’ll bring strong professional grounding and the confidence to lead by example. Essential requirements include:

  • Registration with the Environmental Health Registration Board (or equivalent)
  • Extensive, current food safety experience inspecting a full range of premises
  • Ability to meet the Food Standards Agency Competency Standard
  • Food Safety and Health and Safety enforcement experience
  • Experience leading projects and/or teams - ideally with a background in mentoring or training colleagues

You’ll have a positive attitude and be an effective communicator who can work collaboratively, uphold procedures and codes of practice, and make sound, risk‑based decisions under pressure. Experience using local authority data management systems is also important.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this varied and influential role, you will:

  • Supervise and support the team, helping to ensure performance targets are achieved
  • Carry out proactive and reactive food hygiene and health & safety interventions
  • Work closely with local businesses to maintain and improve compliance standards
  • Investigate complaints, service requests, infectious disease reports and RIDDOR incidents
  • Undertake animal licensing visits (subject to qualification)
  • Work closely with local businesses to maintain and improve compliance standards
  • Use enforcement powers to secure compliance where necessary

Benefits of Working for Us

In addition to a competitive salary, you will also have access to:

  • Generous annual leave package – 29 days annual leave (rising to 33 days after 5 years’ continuous service) plus 8 bank holidays a year
  • Payment of a professional membership or registration fee associated with the professional qualification essential for the role
  • Casual car user allowance
  • Free workplace car parking within the Borough
  • Opportunities for training, learning and continuous professional development
  • Family friendly flexible and hybrid working policies available
  • Option to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) plus access to a salary sacrifice scheme for added voluntary pension contributions
  • Discounted leisure membership with the Fit for Work scheme
  • Access to the VIVUP employee benefits discount and salary sacrifice scheme
