Grade: G11 (£47,181 - £50,269)
In addition to the salary, the post attracts:
- Call-out rota payment of approximately £2,400 per annum
- £6,000 Market Rate Supplement
Total package: up to £58,669 per annum (subject to the pending pay award).
About the Role
Wakefield Council is investing in its Building Control Service, and we are seeking a talented and experienced Senior Building Control Surveyor to join our ambitious and expanding team.
This is an exciting opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, including complex developments and higher-risk buildings, whilst helping to shape the future of Building Control across the district.
We are looking for a surveyor who is currently registered at Building Inspector Class 2 and is aspiring to achieve Class 3 registration. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in Building Control, together with extensive knowledge of Building Regulations, associated legislation and regulatory practice.
You will be proactive, enthusiastic and highly organised, with the ability to manage a busy and varied caseload. Strong communication skills and a commitment to excellent customer service are essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a supportive and professional team.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake complex plan assessments and site inspections.
- Ensure compliance with Building Regulations and undertake enforcement action where necessary.
- Manage dangerous structures, emergency response work and demolition notifications.
- Support major development projects and higher-risk buildings.
- Work closely with developers, architects, contractors and other stakeholders to deliver safe and sustainable development.
- Mentor and support colleagues, helping to develop future Building Control professionals.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to compliance, governance, quality management and audit processes.
About You
You will:
- Be an experienced Registered Building Inspector with recent Building Control experience.
- Possess a thorough understanding of Building Regulations and associated legislation.
- Have excellent organisational, communication and customer service skills.
- Be capable of planning and coordinating a wide range of short, medium and long-term work activities.
- Have strong IT skills and a commitment to maintaining accurate records.
- Be committed to continuous professional development and service improvement.
An awareness of Sports Grounds Safety legislation would be advantageous, as would experience of governance, quality management and audit systems.
A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for business use are essential.

Whilst this post is full-time (37 hours per week), applications for part-time, job share and other flexible working arrangements will also be considered.
