    As a Security Equipment Engineer within Portsmouth City Council’s Community Safety team, you will play a key role in delivering and maintaining a secure, resilient, and legally compliant surveillance infrastructure across the city. Reporting directly to the CCTV Manager, you will be responsible for the installation, repair, servicing, and maintenance of CCTV and alarm systems (both analogue and digital), as well as associated video management software.

    What is the role?

    This role is essential in ensuring that all systems meet current statutory and regulatory requirements, including the UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, Surveillance Camera Code of Practice, Health and Safety at Work Act, Roads and Street Works Act, and the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025. You will also be expected to conduct and support Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and ensure all surveillance activities are proportionate, transparent, and justified.

    You will be expected to:

    • Maintain, repair, and service CCTV and alarm systems, including digital and analogue infrastructure and video management software.
    • Ensure all work complies with relevant legislation and codes of practice, including electrical safety, asbestos regulations, and data protection laws.
    • Organise and manage planned maintenance schedules, ensuring statutory deadlines and best practice standards are met.
    • Identify and recommend replacement parts and upgrades to maintain system integrity and performance.
    • Conduct site visits to various council properties, including sheltered housing, plant rooms, and lift motor rooms.
    • Manage and maintain council vehicles and van stock, ensuring roadworthiness and reporting issues or low stock levels.
    • Work in varied environments, both indoors and outdoors, including working at height using ladders or mobile elevated working platforms (MEWPs).
    • Be available for occasional weekend work and out-of-hours callouts based on business needs.


    Skills:

    • A BTEC standard qualification, NVQ or equivalent or some form of formal training within the CCTV Engineer/maintenance industry is desirable. Fire and intruder are desirable, but training can be given.

    • Experience in CCTV & alarm system maintenance and knowledge of statutory regulations & codes of practice.

    • A IPAF licence would be desirable to enable you to operate a Mobile Elevated Working Platform, although training would be given.

    • A qualification in NRSWA Unit 2 signing lighting and guarding would be desirable.

    • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with a customer focused approach as you will be dealing with both internal and external customers.

    • Be a problem solver who can use initiative with an intuitive approach combined with common sense to deliver solutions that work.

    • The ability to prioritise, respond to pressure and meet deadlines.

    • Can work in adverse working conditions and in hot and cold weather.

    • Has a good level of physical fitness to enable you to move equipment when required. In addition, you must have a head for heights as you will be required to undertake work in the Mobile elevated Working platform and climb ladders as and when required.

    • Is able to work alone but also as part of a wider team and offer support where required.

    • Is flexible and able to work outside of normal core hours as and when required as there may be occasional callouts out of hours for essential services to cameras/equipment.

    • A full UK driving licence with cat C1
