Qualified Teacher of Vision Impairment

An opportunity has arisen to work in our small, but enthusiastic, service who are committed to improving aspirations and outcomes for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment. You will achieve this by supporting families, settings and schools to raise aspirations and outcomes ensuring that VI children and young people’s needs are met within an inclusive environment and the key principles for inclusion are fully embraced.

The role of the Hearing and Vision Specialist Service is to facilitate access and inclusion to ensure children/young people requiring specialist Hearing or Vision support reach their full potential.

As a Qualified Teacher of Vision Impairment, you will:

  • Promote the successful inclusion and learning opportunities VI CYP in all educational settings.
  • Demonstrate and promote high aspirations and expectations.
  • Promote the principles of good practice and VI friendly approaches.
  • Raise awareness of duties and expectations in line with the Equality Act (2010).
  • Provide training, coaching and modelling as required, to ensure parents and teaching staff have the confidence, capacity and the necessary skills to meet the needs of VI CYP in their homes and educational setting.
  • Support teachers/practitioners in removing barriers to learning through curricular planning, the preparation of materials, adapting the learning environment and the use of technology to enable VI CYP to make maximum progress.
  • Review your practice and consider your professional and personal development in line with the Specification for Mandatory Qualifications for Specialist teachers (2016) and Knowsley Values and record this in the agreed format.

Candidates should have:

  • Education at degree level and hold Qualified Teacher Status.
  • A mandatory qualification in teaching VI CYP
  • A current full UK driving licence including access to a vehicle for work.
  • A minimum five years of relevant and successful teaching experience or be employed within an advisory service.
  • The ability to work flexibly, innovatively and responsively in a changing educational context.

Start date: 1st September 2026

Applications from candidates currently undertaking training for the mandatory qualification will be considered based on the understanding that the course will be completed in Summer 2026.
