Are you an experienced governance professional who is self-motivated and possesses excellent communication skills? Are you highly organised, with a sound understanding of local government law and practice?

We are seeking a collaborative and personable individual to join our friendly team, supporting Hertsmere’s decision-making and governance arrangements. The role will primarily focus on supporting the Cabinet, including preparation of the Forward Plan, and the Planning Committee. You will also need to be comfortable working closely with Members and senior officers across Scrutiny bodies, providing high-quality procedural advice and deputising for the Democratic Services Manager where appropriate.

With a strong background in local authority governance and decision-making processes (or a similar environment), you will be able to work effectively to tight deadlines and demonstrate a high level of digital and IT literacy.

The post is offered on a full-time basis (36 hours per week) as a fixed-term contract to 31 March 2028. We would welcome applications from candidates interested in undertaking this role on a secondment basis from another local authority or public sector organisation, where supported by their current employer.

Most meetings take place in the evening, and attendance in person will be required; a Time Off In Lieu (TOIL) system is in place.

Benefits include:

  • 27 – 32 days annual leave (depending on length of Local Government Service), plus all bank holidays
  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Flexi-leave – accrue additional hours and exchange for up to 2 days’ leave per month
  • Free gym membership
  • Cycle schemes (Cycle to Work Scheme and free Beryl Bike rides for staff)
  • Free wellbeing benefits (such as lunchtime yoga, flu jabs, and health MOTs)
  • Employee Assistance Programme

The Council operates a hybrid working model, with employees able to work up to three days per week from home.
