    POST TITLE: Principal Democratic Services Officer (MATERNITY COVER)

    About the Role

    We are seeking an enthusiastic person with initiative, drive and a passion for good governance and scrutiny to lead our Democratic Services team. You will lead the team in supporting the democratic processes, civic and mayoral functions and the governance of the Council; ensuring that decisions are taken effectively and lawfully. This will involve co-ordinating the work of the team to ensure the Council’s Committees, meetings and Members receive high quality support. You will also be leading on civic support for the Mayoralty, working with the Democratic and Electoral Services Manager on Civic Events.

    Key to the role will be working directly with Councillors and Senior Officers, giving advice, and responding to requests whilst providing direct support to the committees you will be responsible for. In particular, we are looking for someone with Overview and Scrutiny experience who can advise, support and develop the scrutiny function working with the team member who supports the committee. This is an opportunity to make your mark in a short period of time and embed good scrutiny practice into the team.

    This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week, on a fixed term contract for 12 months to cover a period of maternity leave. You will also regularly be required to attend evening meetings.

    About You:

    Applicants for the post will need Democratic Services experience, particularly Overview and Scrutiny experience, political awareness and the ability and skills to communicate effectively at all levels. Interpersonal and organisational skills are essential, and you will need to be flexible as you will regularly be required to attend evening meetings, for which payment will be made.

    Training and support for the successful applicant will be provided on the job.

    The Council considers this to be a customer focused role and the ability to converse at ease with customers adapting communication style to suit differing audiences and provide advice in accurate spoken English is fundamental to the role.

    Selection Process:
