Join Jigsaw PRU and make a measurable difference to the learning environment of primary-aged children with social, emotional and/or behavioural needs. This is a hands-on role where your workmanship, judgement and calm approach will help create the secure conditions children need to learn, grow and return successfully to mainstream school. About Jigsaw

Jigsaw is a maintained Pupil Referral Unit providing short-term, high-impact support for primary-aged children whose social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs present a barrier to learning. Our single-storey site includes three classrooms, a teaching kitchen, a hall, office areas and two enclosed playgrounds with a Key Stage 1 play space — all designed to support personalised, therapeutic approaches that prepare children to thrive back in their mainstream setting.

Our values centre on inclusivity, respect and trust, positive interactions and unconditional positive regard. Staff at Jigsaw work collaboratively with partners, parents and the local authority to provide innovative, motivating and effective learning environments.

About the role

As Caretaker / Premises Officer you will be responsible for the security, cleanliness, maintenance and energy management of our site, ensuring buildings and equipment are safe, secure and fit for purpose.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the security of the premises, observing key-holding procedures
  • Regular testing of fire alarms, undertaking evacuation drills and acting as Fire Marshall
  • Undertaking and recording routine site inspections and completing minor repairs and maintenance (e.g. plumbing basics, changing light fittings, decorating, erecting shelving)
  • Managing cleaning materials and equipment, supporting the cleaning team and undertaking general cleaning duties where needed
  • Liaising with external contractors and monitoring contractor work to ensure standards and punctuality
  • Supporting energy management and advising on measures to reduce waste
  • Ensuring compliance with COSHH and health & safety regulations and maintaining safe storage of hazardous materials
  • Supporting the life of the school with occasional after-hours access (up to 30 hours per year) and routine administrative tasks such as timesheets and records

This is a hands-on, varied role that will suit someone who enjoys practical work and takes pride in keeping an environment safe, orderly and welcoming.

About you

We are looking for a candidate who is:

  • Practical, reliable and able to manage their own workload with good time-management skills
  • Confident working independently and as part of a small, supportive team
  • Comfortable communicating with colleagues, children and visiting professionals with patience and respect
  • Knowledgeable about basic health & safety, COSHH and safe working practices; experience of caretaking/site-keeping is desirable but not essential
  • Able to carry out routine maintenance and porterage tasks, and able to liaise effectively with external contractors
  • Willing to undertake required training and to work flexibly when the role requires

What matters most is your commitment to keeping the school a safe, dignified and supportive place for children and staff and your willingness to work flexibly under direction from senior leadership.

What we offer

  • A meaningful, visible role within a school that supports vulnerable children and makes a direct contribution to their safety and learning
  • Opportunities for training and development relevant to the role (health & safety, COSHH, premises and site management)
  • A collaborative and compassionate staff team
  • Regular contact with senior leaders and the wider local authority network

Statement of Safeguarding Intent

Jigsaw Pupil Referral Unit is committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of all our children in school. We believe that pupils have a right to learn in a supportive, caring and safe environment which includes the right to protection from all types of abuse; where staff are vigilant for signs of any pupil in distress and are confident about applying the/our safeguarding processes to avert and alleviate any such problems. Safeguarding is about ensuring that everyone is safe from harm – safe from bullying, safe from people who could abuse, safe from discrimination or harassment – and that we all feel safe in our environment. This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This means that we have a Child Protection Policy and robust safeguarding procedures in place. Our Child Protection Policy can be viewed on our school website with paper copies available on request. Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with his/her parents/carers first unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare. If a member of staff is concerned about a child’s welfare, they will record their concern, and any observations or conversation heard, and report to one of the DSLs as soon as possible the same day. If a member of staff has concerns which relate to the actions or behaviour of another member of staff (which could suggest that s/he is unsuitable to work with children) then this will be reported to one of the DSLs in confidence, who will refer the matter to the Headteacher (or the Chair of the Management Committee if the concern relates to the Headteacher), who will consider what action to take which may include a referral to the Sefton LADO. In accordance with our statutory obligations under Keeping Children Safe in Education, Jigsaw Pupil Referral Unit is required to conduct an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted candidates. This may help identify any incidents or issues that have happened and are publicly available online, which we may want to explore with candidates at interview.
