About the Role

Mid Sussex District Council is looking for a highly organised and motivated Planning Research Officer to join our Planning Policy team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in shaping the future of Mid Sussex as we prepare our new District Plan.

As a Planning Research Officer, you will support the development of planning policy by conducting research, analysing complex datasets, contributing to monitoring work, and preparing clear, evidence-based reports. You’ll work closely with Planning Officers, consultants, partner organisations and colleagues across the Council to help ensure our planning policies are robust, effective and informed by high‑quality evidence.

In this role, you will:

  • Carry out research, surveys and data analysis to inform the District Plan and other planning policy documents.
  • Prepare reports, briefings and committee papers for a range of audiences.
  • Lead on monitoring activities including data collection, Authority Monitoring Reports and statutory returns.
  • Manage and maintain planning and housing databases, monitoring indicators and consultation records.
  • Support public consultation events, workshops and meetings linked to the District Plan Review.
  • Contribute to map-making tasks and GIS analysis.
  • Support partnership working with consultants, statutory bodies, town/parish councils and others.
  • Respond to requests for data and assist with planning policy enquiries from the public.

About You

We are looking for someone who is analytical, organised and enthusiastic about planning. You’ll be confident managing data, communicating clearly, and working collaboratively with colleagues and partners.

You will also be comfortable juggling multiple tasks, adapting to changing priorities, and contributing to a positive and proactive team environment.

Essential Requirements

  • A degree in Planning or a related subject (e.g. Geography).
  • Experience collecting and analysing data.
  • Ability to work effectively with a range of people and disciplines.
  • Strong organisational, analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to plan and manage your own workload.
  • Good computer literacy and database skills.
  • Desire to pursue a career in Planning.

Desirable

  • Experience using GIS (e.g. ArcMap).
  • Experience working in planning policy or related areas.
  • Experience dealing with the public and partnership organisations.
  • Report writing or presentation skills.
  • Awareness of the Local Plan process.
  • Understanding of planning policy documents and procedures.
