Planning Officer (Career Graded)

The Role

You will be a key member of the team with a focus on all aspects of development management and the determination of all planning applications, including but not limited to householder applications, standard and major development proposals including infrastructure and hydrocarbons developments. Proven understanding of EIA Regulations and experience contributing to screening and scoping processes.

You will support the Head of the Planning and Building Services in the review of the development plan (and ongoing legislative and procedural improvements), and develop the work of the Historic Buildings Committee.

The Person

Ideally you will have a wide range of development management experience covering all aspects of development management functions. You must have experience in preparing committee reports and presenting to committees. You will assist in providing a high quality, customer-focused planning service delivering timely and quality recommendations to the Head of Service and/or the Planning Committee.

With good communication and interpersonal skills, you will be well-organised, proactive and have a flexible approach.

Core Requirements

  • At least three years post-qualification experience in Planning / Development Management.
  • Degree in Planning and Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI) or equivalent.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, able to produce reports for senior management.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with service users and dealing with members of the public.
  • Solid project management experience and able to manage conflicting priorities.
  • Valid driving license.

The Package

  • Fixed Term Contract, up to 4 years.
  • Starting Salary £35,774 up to £42,641 (depending on qualifications and experience).
  • 25% Gratuity, paid upon successful completion of the contract.

Development & Commercial Services

The Development & Commercial Services directorate is responsible for the development of ‘Place’ across the Falkland Islands, ensuring that the activities of Planning, Leisure Services, Corporate Programmes and Procurement operate in a co-ordinated manner to efficiently and effectively enable the achievement of the Government’s priorities and successful delivery of the National Infrastructure Plan.

Planning & Building Services

A small, friendly department based in Stanley, Falkland Islands. The Planning and Building Services delivers statutory planning and building control functions, administers grant schemes and advances environmental good practice and sustainable use of natural resources within the Falkland Islands.

The department consists of the Head of Service, 1 x Planning Officer, 1 x Building Adviser, 1 x Planning Clerk. It deals with approximately 150 planning applications and 100 pre – application queries every year. Annual Development Plan Review. The position is office based.
