We are seeking a motivated and organised Payroll Specialist to join our established, busy Pay and Contracts team. You will play a key role in delivering an end-to-end payroll service, working to multiple payroll deadlines for a variety of customers.
You will ensure payroll-related processes are completed accurately, in line with statutory requirements and council policies, and you will provide a responsive, customer-focused service to employees, managers, schools and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver a complete payroll service, ensuring all payments are processed accurately and on time in line with published pay dates
- Calculate and process salary payments and adjustments in line with financial regulations and statutory requirements
- Process statutory and non-standard payments (e.g., SMP, SSP, redundancies) and ensure clear audit trails
- Identify, calculate and support the recovery of overpayments in line with statutory regulations and council policy
- Reconcile payroll reports and complete checks to support month-end and period-end processes
- Provide advice and guidance on payroll-related matters and resolve customer queries effectively
- Maintain accurate records and support data quality, housekeeping and audit requirements
- Contribute to service improvements and support the team with implementing changes where required
What We’re Looking For:
- Proven payroll experience and the ability to manage a busy workload while meeting multiple deadlines
- Good working knowledge of tax and National Insurance legislation and occupational pension schemes, with the ability to calculate gross-to-net pay
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate processing and maintaining audit trails
- Experience using HR/Payroll systems and databases, in particular MHR-iTrent, with good IT skills (including Microsoft Office)
- Strong communication skills and confidence providing advice and guidance to a range of customers and stakeholders
- A collaborative team player with a proactive, problem-solving approach
Desirable:
- IPPM Foundation in Payroll Administration (or equivalent)
- Working knowledge of Local Government terms and conditions and schools’ pay policies
- Experience supporting year-end processes and annual payroll tasks (e.g., increments)
- Experience contributing to service improvement initiatives

Salary range
- £38,256 - £39,276 per year
