Are you passionate about community engagement, culture, heritage, and making museums accessible to everyone?

Hastings Borough Council is looking for an enthusiastic and creative Outreach and Engagement Officer to help strengthen connections between Hastings Museum & Art Gallery and the diverse communities we serve. This is an exciting opportunity to shape inclusive cultural experiences, develop meaningful partnerships, and create programmes that inspire residents and visitors alike.

You will play a key role in ensuring the museum reflects and responds to the people of Hastings through co-created activities, outreach initiatives, digital engagement, and heritage learning.

About the Role

This is a highly collaborative, public-facing role focused on building long-term relationships with local communities, particularly those who may not traditionally engage with museums or cultural spaces.

You will:

  • Develop and deliver engaging outreach programmes, workshops, and public events
  • Work with schools, families, young people, older adults, and under-represented communities
  • Create heritage-based educational sessions for primary and secondary schools
  • Build partnerships with organisations across health, education, youth services, and the voluntary sector
  • Help expand digital engagement and hybrid learning opportunities
  • Support volunteers, trainees, and community participants
  • Contribute to marketing, social media, and audience development activities
  • Support projects linked to creative health, climate change, local identity, and accessibility

About You

We are looking for someone who is energetic, organised, and committed to inclusive community engagement.

You will ideally have:

  • Significant experience in outreach and engagement work, preferably in a museum, heritage, cultural, or community setting
  • Experience working with families, young people, schools, and under-represented communities
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Experience designing and delivering workshops, events, or participatory projects
  • The ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines
  • Confidence using digital tools, social media, and online engagement platforms
  • An understanding of safeguarding responsibilities when working with children and vulnerable adults
  • A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to work flexibly, including occasional evenings and weekends

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience within a museum, gallery, heritage, or educational environment
  • Knowledge of Hastings and local community priorities
  • Collections management or object handling experience
  • A relevant degree in museum studies, education, history, public health, or a related field
