We have an exciting opportunity available for a Library Assistant, to join us as a key member of the libraries team here at Wokingham Borough Council, on a part time, permanent contract.

We are looking for a friendly and enthusiastic person, to help us promote and deliver a welcoming and engaging service to all our residents.

Wokingham Borough has 9 libraries. Our library teams deliver a range of library and council services to all our residents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The role involves welcoming customers to the library, serving them, and reshelving returned library books.
  • In addition to lending books our libraries also provide a range of online reference resources, ebooks and virtual events. In our buildings library staff support and run events such as computer classes, rhyme times and story times, creative writing clubs and Code Clubs.
  • We also offer a range of services to those residents who are unable to visit one of our libraries.

Candidate Requirements:

  • The successful applicant will have good computer skills, with the ability to support library customers with the internet and MS Office applications.
  • Our Library Assistants help residents with library enquiries and also give support accessing council services.
  • In the absence of a senior member of staff they may take on the day to day delivery of the service (at our smaller branch libraries) which would include lone working and key holding (opening up, closing and securing the building).

If you thrive on variety, have excellent customer care and communication skills, and are willing to have a go at a wide range of tasks, you will find this an enjoyable and satisfying role.
