Barnsley Libraries serve as community and digital hubs which anchor the council’s presence in across the borough, developing a vibrant events and activities programme to attract and engage residents and visitors to the borough. Barnsley Libraries are regionally and nationally recognised through it’s National Portfolio status, awarded by Arts Council England from April 2023 being only 1 of 16 libraries to be awarded this in the country. In the past two years we have delivered new and innovative cultural experiences such as Barnsley Book Festival and Library Lates comprising craft workshops, author talks and live performances as well as a range of bespoke artist commissions.
The Library@TheLightbox represents one of the key parts of the ‘The Glassworks’ and the Council’s ambitious, transformative town centre redevelopment scheme. We have also refurbished ten of the fourteen branch libraries supported by Arts Council England’s ‘Libraries Improvement Funding’ from the UK Government.
To help us continue to deliver our exciting public offer, we have a part-time vacancy for a Library and Digital Support Officer based primarily at Grimethorpe Library (working alternate Saturdays at Cudworth Library).&nbsp; As a Library &amp; Digital Support Officer you will be the public face of our service.&nbsp; Our libraries are not just about books but are so much more.&nbsp; For our Library Information &amp; Digital Support Officers no two days are the same – you may be helping customers with their book choices, letting them know about our digital offers and helping them to get up and running with these, or doing something more interactive such as running craft or activities such as story and rhyme sessions. You’ll work with partners across the authority in areas such as Communities, Public Health, Museums and Schools to deliver exciting things for our customers. Part of the role will also involve carrying out customer service appointments on behalf of our colleagues in other departments for service users.
We are looking for people who engage well with others, are hard-working and can rise to a challenge. You’ll not be afraid to get involved and will have the skills to think on your feet dealing with whatever arises in the most appropriate manner. Although you will have a base library you could be asked to work across all our libraries, so you need to be flexible and able to do this.

We are looking for a highly motivated person with a passion for Libraries&nbsp;to provide operational and positive team leadership, ensuring the delivery of a high performing, customer-focused public library service that meets the needs of local communities. The successful candidate will lead our Children and Young People offer, working with colleagues and partners to develop and deliver a varied activity programme, engaging with diverse groups and organisations to develop libraries as community and digital hubs.
You will possess strong communication, interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with members of the public (including the elderly and vulnerable), partners, other employees, parents and children, sometimes in areas of tension or conflict.&nbsp; You will be able to work flexibly as part of a team and in partnership with others to achieve common goals, promoting a positive culture at all times.
This is a demanding role so the ability to understand issues affecting operational service delivery and manage your own workload under pressure and to deadlines are essential.
The ability to manage, motivate, support and enthuse staff, partners and members of the public is also essential. Successful candidates will also be imaginative and creative in the development of events and activities, with practical organisational skills.

Working as part of a team, to support and work with the Stock Acquisitions Officer to maintain library stock for the efficient running of library operations and event development.The post holder will work as part of a team, to help make the resources of the library service available to all customers, including those at a disadvantage. They will assist in assigned administrative tasks as directed, using relevant software/library systems, to support the frontline staff and Development Team with branch and outreach endeavours.In addition to the duties above, this role requires you to work independently and alone for significant periods.Hours are 17.5 hours a week.
