Are you passionate about protecting public health and the environment? Do you thrive in a role that combines technical expertise, community engagement, and enforcement? We are expanding our Environmental Protection team at F&HDC and want to hear from you!

About the Role

As an Environmental Protection Officer, you’ll play a vital role in safeguarding our district’s environment and public health. You’ll investigate and resolve a wide range of environmental issues including:

  • Pollution control (air, noise, water)
  • Statutory nuisances and contaminated land
  • Fly-tipping, littering, and pest control
  • Drainage investigations and private water supply testing
  • Enforcement of environmental legislation and regulations

You’ll also contribute to strategic initiatives such as air quality monitoring, planning application reviews, and managing unauthorised encampments. This is a varied and impactful role that involves site visits, community engagement, legal enforcement, and technical reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations and enforcement under the Environmental Protection Act 1990
  • Prepare legal documentation and attend court as a professional witness
  • Monitor and manage CCTV and noise equipment for evidence gathering
  • Liaise with external agencies including the Environment Agency, DEFRA, and Kent County Council
  • Lead on specialist areas such as contaminated land, air quality, and planning applications
  • Support out-of-hours emergency response and community safety initiatives

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a proactive and committed individual with:

  • A relevant qualification in environmental health, public health, or environmental science (HNC/HND or equivalent)
  • Experience in statutory nuisance investigations and enforcement actions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • High attention to detail and excellent organisational skills
  • Willingness to participate in out-of-hours services and travel across the district

Whilst we have a hybrid working approach, as an Environmental Protection Officer you will be providing a frontline service, with an expectation that you will work from the Civic Centre in Folkestone throughout the week, with the occasional opportunity to work from home.
