
Independent Person for Standards Committee
Medway Council are looking to recruit an Independent Person to provide advice and assistance on Councillor Conduct matters.
The Independent Person is an integral part of the Councillor Conduct process, as well as promoting high standards of behaviour by local politicians the successful candidate will be asked to advice the Council on the best course of action where concerns have been raised.
The successful candidate will be able to advise in a fair and impartial manner and be able to express their opinions in a format which is clear and easily accessible to officers, elected members and the wider public.
The role of Independent Persons in local government is crucial for maintaining high standards of conduct and ensuring ethical behaviour among elected and co-opted members. They assist in the complaint’s procedures, provide advice on the dismissal of statutory officers, and offer an external perspective on conduct issues. Independent Persons are expected to have strong communication skills, integrity, and a commitment to public service.
Independent Persons are not employees of the council but hold a statutory office, ensuring their impartiality and independence in their roles.

Salary range
- £350 per day
