Mid Sussex District Council is looking for a motivated and detail‑focused HR Assistant to join our friendly and high‑performing HR & OD team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys providing excellent administrative support, thrives in a busy environment, and is looking to build a rewarding career in Human Resources.

You’ll play a key role in helping us deliver efficient, professional HR services across the organisation – from recruitment and onboarding to learning & development administration, payroll support and maintaining accurate HR information systems.

About the Role

As our HR Assistant, you will:

  • Provide high‑quality administrative support across a wide range of HR processes.
  • Offer first‑line advice on HR procedures, policies, and conditions of service, with support from senior colleagues.
  • Maintain accurate digital and manual records, ensuring data integrity and GDPR compliance.
  • Support recruitment, training, development and payroll administration activities.
  • Help manage the HR inbox, responding to queries and directing more complex matters to the appropriate team members.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in HR processes and the delivery of professional HR services.

This is a varied and people‑focused role where no two days are the same.

About You

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Organised, proactive and able to manage their own workload effectively.
  • Confident using Microsoft Office and digital systems.
  • Calm, compassionate, and comfortable supporting colleagues across the organisation.

Essential:

  • Level 2 Business Administration qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience in administrative roles and systems management.

Desirable:

  • Level 3 HR or Business Administration qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in HR, Local Government or the wider public sector.
