1 *Full time post, 2 years fixed term, Homeless Prevention Officer – Domestic Abuse

We are seeking 2 x dedicated and enthusiastic individuals who are committed to preventing homelessness in the Borough to join our Housing Options Team.

These role will involve providing a comprehensive, customer focussed housing options service to enable the council to prevent homelessness and meet its statutory duties in line with Part VII Housing Act 1996, as amended.

Homeless Prevention Officer – Generic post:

Working as part of a busy team, you will provide comprehensive housing advice and manage a varied caseload, working across partners to find innovate ways to prevent homelessness. You will work proactively to prevent homelessness wherever possible, helping households to remain in their homes or secure suitable alternative accommodation at the earliest opportunity.

The postholder will carry out assessments, develop personalised housing plans, and deliver prevention and relief duties under the Homelessness Reduction Act, working in partnership with internal services and external agencies. You will take a strengths‑based, trauma‑informed approach, supporting people to access appropriate housing, sustain tenancies, and avoid repeat homelessness.

This role supports the national ambition that homelessness should be rare, brief, and non‑recurring, and contributes to improved outcomes for individuals, families, and the wider community.

This post will be based in the main office in Barnsley town centre, but may require attendance at other locations and may be required to carry out home visits.

Homeless Prevention Officer – Domestic Abuse

This role supports delivery of the National Plan to End Homelessness priority to prevent homelessness for survivors of domestic abuse and ensure access to safe, secure housing at the point of crisis and beyond.

The postholder will provide specialist housing advice and casework for people fleeing domestic abuse, ensuring safety, choice, and dignity are at the centre of all decisions. You will work closely with the local domestic abuse service (IDAS), refuges, social care, health, and criminal justice partners to prevent homelessness, secure appropriate accommodation, and support longer‑term recovery and stability.

The role will focus on early intervention, homelessness prevention, and rapid access to safe housing options, using a trauma‑informed, survivor‑centred approach. You will ensure statutory homelessness duties are met while supporting the council’s wider commitment to ending repeat homelessness and reducing harm.

This post will be based in the main office in Barnsley town centre but will also be working in other locations across Barnsley, such as IDAS, the Refuge, and Safe Accommodation locations.

These roles offer an opportunity to be part of a service committed to delivering the ambitions of the National Plan to End Homelessness, where prevention is prioritised, partnerships are strengthened, and people receive the right support at the right time.

Whether working with prison leavers, survivors of domestic abuse, or households at risk of homelessness more broadly, you will play a vital role in ensuring homelessness is prevented wherever possible, and where it does occur, it is brief, non‑recurring, and resolved with dignity.

We are looking for people who are motivated by making a difference, committed to collaborative and trauma‑informed practice, and keen to contribute to a service that puts people, prevention, and long‑term solutions at the centre of its work.

You will require strong communication skills both verbally and in writing and have working knowledge of homelessness, domestic abuse support, or experience of the criminal justice system along with other relevant legislation. You will be an excellent team player with the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. Experience of casework and advocacy is essential. A relevant level 4 qualification or relevant experience is also essential for the post.
