We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals who are committed to preventing homelessness to join our Housing Options Team. The role will involve providing a comprehensive, customer focussed housing options service to enable the Council to prevent homelessness and meet its statutory duties.
You will work as part of a busy team, managing a varied caseload and working across partners to find innovate ways to prevent homelessness. A key part of the role is assessing customers in line with the relevant legislation and supporting people to resolve their housing issues. You will be required to work with a range of customers both face to face and over the phone, providing appropriate advice and assistance, in addition to undertaking enquires with landlords, families and other professionals. There will be a strong focus on preventing homelessness, partnership working and delivering a high-quality customer service.
You will require strong communication skills both verbally and in writing and have working knowledge of homelessness and other relevant legislation. You will be an excellent team player with the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. Experience of casework and advocacy is essential. A level 4 qualification or relevant experience is essential for the post.

As a team we are re- focusing our work on the prevention of homelessness, working in partnership to address the underlying causes of homelessness, and ensuring that people either remain in their own homes, move in a managed way or resettle successfully into the community. To do this we need to ensure that we can identify the risk of homelessness early, by working within our communities.
These posts will be based the main office in Barnsley town centre but will spend most of their time in community venues covering specific geographical wards. The aim of the posts is to undertake proactive work with communities and partners to identify the risk of homelessness at the earliest opportunity. You will have the ability to work on your own initiative, be able to build positive relationship with partners and communities, can undertake assessment and give high quality housing advice as well as identify wider issues and make appropriate referrals You will carry a varied caseload of customers and may be expected to cover duty.
1* FTE Homeless Prevention Officer – Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse can drive and cause homelessness and people experiencing this need to be able to access the right support and advice to keep them and their families safe. This post will be based in the main office in Barnsley town centre but will also be working in other locations across Barnsley. In this post you will collaborate with key partners, but especially the commissioned provider for domestic abuse in Barnsley – IDAS. The post will carry a caseload and will provide support and advice around housing and domestic abuse, exploring all options through a thorough assessment and risk management process. You will need to be able to work on our own initiative and be able to manage a sensitive and complex caseload.
1* Homeless Prevention officer – Hospital discharge
Another area which can lead to homelessness is hospital discharge. We want to strengthen the pathways and identify the risk of homelessness at the earliest possible stage to start assessment and planning and reduce bed blocking due to housing issues. This post will work with people who are currently on the ward or frequenting A&E due to housing issues and work with partners to try and ensure they have suitable, appropriate accommodation, and prevent re-admission. The post will be based in the Barnsley, town centre office, but will also spend time in hospital settings, working alongside discharge teams. You will need to work on your own initiative, be able to carry a complex caseload and work in partnership to resolve problems and barriers facing customers.
Salary range
- £35,412 - £38,220 per year
