Lead, influence and make a difference

Test Valley is a great place to live, work and visit, and we are looking for an experienced and motivated professional to lead our Health Protection Team and help shape the future of Environmental Health services across the borough.

As Health Protection Manager, you will be a key member of the Environmental Health Management Team, providing leadership across the wider Environmental Health Service while leading a dedicated team responsible for food safety, workplace health and safety, infectious disease control, licensing functions and pest control. You will work closely with the Head of Environmental Health to ensure services are effective, resilient and focused on delivering positive outcomes for residents, communities and businesses.

About you

You will be a qualified Environmental Health Officer with substantial experience in health protection functions, particularly food safety and health and safety enforcement. You will have a proven track record of leadership and be committed to creating an environment where people can thrive, develop and achieve their potential.

You will be politically aware, customer focused and comfortable working in a complex and dynamic regulatory environment. Most importantly, you will share our commitment to public service and embody the Council's values and behaviours in everything you do.

You’ll need to hold a driving licence and have access to their own vehicle. While we offer agile working, including the ability to work from home, you will be expected to attend the office on a regular basis and carry out site visits across the borough as and when required.

Before you apply

Please read the Job Description and Person Specification carefully before applying. In your application, we encourage you to provide clear examples of how you meet, or could meet, the essential and desirable criteria. Specific examples from your work experience will help us understand your skills, knowledge and potential.

For an informal discussion about the role or to find out more, please contact Mark Lee, Head of Environmental Health (tel. 01264 368035; email mlee@testvalley.gov.uk) or Samantha Hall, Director of Housing & Environmental Health (tel. 01264 368610; SHall@testvalley.gov.uk). We are proud to be a Disability Confident Employer who positively encourages applications from disabled people. If, as a disabled person, you meet the minimum criteria for a job then you will be guaranteed an interview, and we will ensure any reasonable adjustments are made to the interview process so that you can be fairly assessed for the vacancy.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

We recognise that many applicants may use AI tools to support the preparation of their applications. We welcome the responsible use of technology to help structure, review and improve applications.

However, your application should remain an accurate reflection of your own experience, skills, achievements and motivations. We are particularly interested in understanding your personal contribution, leadership approach and professional judgement. Applications that rely heavily on generic AI-generated content without demonstrating genuine experience or insight may not perform well during the assessment process.

We encourage candidates to use AI as a tool to support their application, not as a substitute for their own voice and experiences.
