Environmental Health Practitioner
Environmental Health Practitioner
(Food Safety, Food Standards and Health & Safety)
Permanent – Full time
Location: Lynton House, Ilford (hybrid working arrangements available)
About the Role
The London Borough of Redbridge is seeking a qualified and motivated Environmental Health Practitioner to join our Food Safety and Health & Safety Team. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a diverse and dynamic London borough, helping to protect public health while supporting local businesses to operate safely and compliantly.
You will deliver a balanced programme of food safety, food standards and health & safety regulation, undertake proactive inspections and responding to complaints, accidents, incidents and service requests across a wide range of commercial premises. This is a hands‑on and varied role requiring sound professional judgement, effective communication and a proportionate, risk‑based approach to enforcement.
Key responsibilities include carrying out food hygiene inspections in line with the Food Law Code of Practice, undertaking health & safety inspections and accident investigations, gathering and assessing evidence, and taking appropriate enforcement action where required. You will provide clear, practical advice to businesses to secure compliance, manage your own caseload efficiently, and contribute to targeted projects and priority initiatives.
You will work closely with internal council services and external partners, including the Food Standards Agency and the Health and Safety Executive, to support consistent, effective regulation and service delivery.
About You
You will be an Environmental Health Practitioner (EHRB registered), with post‑qualification experience in food safety regulation and health & safety enforcement.
You will have demonstrable experience of working in a regulatory and enforcement role within food safety and health & safety, with the confidence to make sound, proportionate enforcement decisions. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to explain regulatory requirements clearly, build professional relationships with businesses and stakeholders, and manage challenging situations effectively.
Experience of investigations, evidence gathering, inspections and case management is essential, with knowledge of rules of evidence and legal procedures desirable. You will be well organised, self‑motivated and capable of managing a varied caseload independently within a busy operational environment.
While most work is undertaken during core office hours, flexibility is required, including occasional work outside normal hours to support service delivery.
The role requires regular travel within the borough to carry out inspections and investigations. Applicants must therefore be able to travel independently and efficiently to a variety of premises across the borough.
