The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council. We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need.
We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.
We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning. In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.
Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas:
- Nursery Workers
- Teaching Assistants
- Leadership/Management; and
- Customer Care.
We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop.
Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

This post is a full-time permanent role of 37 working hours per week of which 22.5 hours per week will consist of in class teaching of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at various levels in differing contexts.
Coventry City Council’s Adult Education Service is committed to delivering high-quality, inclusive learning opportunities that improve lives and strengthen communities. This is an opportunity for an appropriately qualified candidate to join the enthusiastic, committed and experienced Coventry Adult Education Service English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) team. We deliver high quality English Language Acquisition programmes to men and women from a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds in Coventry.
The role will involve teaching ESOL in community venues around Coventry such as Family Hubs, libraries, schools, VCS organisations and outreach locations. Travel between teaching delivery sites is standard. Classes run in the daytime and evening. Delivery is year-round and courses therefore run in the school holidays. This is not a term time only role/position.
The postholder will create an engaging and supportive learning environment, tailor lessons to meet diverse learner needs, foster confidence and support learners' development towards integration and employment. Courses taught may include pre-Entry/beginner ESOL up to Level 1 as well as ESOL + vocational or digital skills.
All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.
This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Who are we looking for?You will have relevant teaching and ESOL subject specific qualifications eg Level 4/5 CELTA/TESOL, DTLLS/DET/DIT (ESOL) as well as experience of delivering adult learning in community settings and strong communication and organisational skills.
You will be familiar with different levels of ESOL delivery from pre-Entry up to Level 1 and demonstrate skills in facilitating language learning in context. In addition, you will have the ability to engage diverse ESOL learners including individuals with diagnosed or suspected additional learning needs and have a commitment to inclusive education.
Experience of working with mixed level groups would be a particular advantage. You must have availability to teach 2 evenings a week and through the school holidays.

Salary range
