About the role
St Albans Museums is an award-winning museum service managing a diverse portfolio of historic and cultural sites. These include Verulamium Museum, the Hypocaust, the 15th‑century Clock Tower, and the dynamic St Albans Museum + Gallery in the heart of the city centre.
We are now seeking an ambitious and experienced individual to lead fundraising and development activity across our museums.
A strategic thinker and motivated self‑starter, you will be empowered to review and analyse recent fundraising audits and prospect research, translating these into clear, achievable fundraising strategies. You will be responsible for delivering these strategies and embedding a sustainable approach to income generation.
Working closely with the Museums Management Team, colleagues across the service, and the St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust, you will develop and deliver tailored fundraising activity. This will include onsite donations, applications to trusts and foundations, and building relationships with corporate sponsors and private donors.
About you
We are looking for an exceptional candidate with a proven track record of managing fundraising and development activity, ideally within museums, galleries, or the wider cultural sector. Creative, driven, and confident, you will be a motivating leader with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, capable of building and shaping this area of work from the ground up.
This is an exciting time to join St Albans Museums. Having achieved National Portfolio Organisation status in 2023, we are now focused on expanding and building on our achievements. Working closely with the Museums Management Team and the St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust, you will play a key role in maximising fundraising income to ensure the museums can continue to bring high‑quality art and culture to St Albans.
We offer flexible working arrangements, and different working patterns can be discussed to suit the successful candidate. However, as a member of the Museums Management Team, some onsite weekend and evening working will be required to support events and activities.
Join us in making St Albans City and District. We put the environment at the heart of every decision. We live our values—trust, care, confidence, collaboration, and customer focus—while delivering sustainable services, reducing environmental impact and making a difference.
St Albans is a unique English Cathedral City with a colourful history which can be seen in the Roman remains and variety of beautiful architecture, heritage sites and conservation areas. Our centrally located offices in the city are near to the station (London St Pancras 20 minutes), shops and restaurants. In short it is a great place to live and work.
In addition to working within a great team and a comprehensive salary you will have access to:
- 28.5 days basic annual leave (increasing with service) + bank holidays. Please note: annual leave will be pro-rated for anyone who does not have a standard full-time pattern of 37 hours over 5 days, e.g. part-timers
- Local Government Pension Scheme
- Flexible working options
- Staff Parking Permit
- Reimbursement of professional fees
- Comprehensive development and training
