Content Designer
Content Designer
Do you have a passion for helping people access public services and achieve the outcomes they need? Are you driven to make complex information clear, usable and accessible? Can you advocate for users’ needs and improve end-to-end service journeys through content?
Important: this is a content design role. It is not primarily a digital marketing, graphic design, videography or social media content creation role.
About the role
Working in our multidisciplinary Digital and Technology team, you will improve our customers’ online experience by designing and iterating user-centred content across Mid Sussex District Council’s digital services. You will work with subject matter experts and service teams to understand user needs, map journeys, test and refine content, and publish clear, accessible information in the right place and format. You will also help shape our approach to content standards, governance and continuous improvement as part of the Council’s digital transformation.
Key responsibilities
- Work with service teams and stakeholders to understand user needs and the policy/service intent and turn them into clear content outcomes.
- Design, write and iterate usable, accessible content for our websites and digital services, using plain English and inclusive language.
- Improve end-to-end journeys by structuring and placing content so users can complete their task, reducing avoidable contact where possible.
- Use evidence (for example analytics, search insights, user research findings and stakeholder feedback) to test, assess and continuously improve content.
- Own and maintain content standards (for example style, accessibility, quality checks and publishing processes) to ensure consistency across the Council.
- Collaborate with designers, developers and other specialists to make sure content works with the service design, information architecture and any supporting components.
- Champion accessibility and inclusive content, helping reduce digital exclusion and improve support for customers who face barriers to using digital services.
What we offer
Working at Mid Sussex District Council means being part of a team that actively shapes the future of our communities. You will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the delivery of council services while enjoying a range of benefits:
- Learning and development - We commit to supporting the professional development of our people, and we can provide access to training and development opportunities to help you grow in your career.
- Work-life balance - Enjoy the flexibility of hybrid working arrangements, allowing you to balance your professional and personal commitments. We understand the importance of work-life balance and strive to create an environment where you can thrive both inside and outside of work.
- Annual leave – Enjoy between 26 and 31 days of annual leave, plus Bank Holidays.
- Generous local government pension scheme - We offer a generous pension scheme with employer contributions currently at 17.5%.
About you
To succeed in this role, you will need:
- Professional experience designing and publishing user-centred content for websites or digital services (within a CMS), not just creating marketing or social media content.
- Strong understanding of user-centred design principles, including working with user research and using evidence to make content decisions.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and accessibly.
- Strong stakeholder management skills able to influence, challenge and collaborate to improve content quality and user outcomes.
- Good analytical and planning skills to manage competing priorities and continuously improve content (for example through audits, reviews and iterative updates).
