Are you passionate about working with young people to make a difference and help shape their futures?

We want Barnsley to be a ‘place of possibilities’ for everyone. A place where all children and young people can benefit from the opportunities that great childhoods can bring. We want to create and celebrate these opportunities to prepare all children and young people for their futures, helping them to learn, grow and be inspired.

The Great Childhoods Ambition is Barnsley’s commitment to improving the lives and futures of our children and young people, supporting every child to have a great childhood and ensure they feel they belong, and can explore, dream, grow and connect.

As part of our secondary phase Childhood Ambition commitment, we are investing more in the quality and range of activities for young people which will support young people’s personal and social development, helping them to go on to lead happy and successful adult lives. The ‘Youth Work in Schools’ programme will provide additional investment into secondary schools enabling every child to have the successful foundations they need for them to be in school every day and to learn, enjoy and achieve.

Part of our Childhood Ambition programme will see the creation of two new Youth Work in School teams as a pilot in two secondary schools, Working closely with young people on a day to basis within and outside of school with local community partners, the role of the Community Youth Worker will be to develop and deliver issue based programmes of work, provide a mentoring role for targeted students and to develop packages of wraparound services and support that complement the existing school and community offer. Naturally, the role will involve some evening and weekend work so that young people can access the services they need at the right time and in the right place. The Community Youth Worker will provide a much needed positive adult role model for some of our more vulnerable students whilst challenging our young people to aspire, learn and grow through a youth work approach.

The postholder will need to have a relevant Level 4 qualification i.e., Youth and Community Work or substantial equivalent experience in a relevant subject area.

This is a fixed term position funded until July 2027
