The Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Community Services Assistant to join our Community Services Team. The Campus Community Services Team are responsible for the day-to-day operations of The Campus in Weston-super-Mare and other North Somerset Council community venues in north Somerset. The Campus is a multi-use building located in the heart of Locking Castle. You will deliver a range of services from sports and leisure, library, conferences and meeting spaces and a cafe to a wide variety of users and customers.

Working as part of a team, your hours will be worked on a shift basis to include regular evenings and weekends. The successful applicant will be part of a fast-paced team, dedicated to the delivery of high-quality services to all of our customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide information to members of the public and colleagues on a range of subjects within a specific area of work to encourage and help access to and understanding of amenities, services or information.
  • To promote the services available to the community to engage the public in make greater use of the materials and facilities provided.
  • Take and control bookings, collect payments, sell stock and to keep comprehensive records of use, income and expenditure ensuring that the correct, Council approved, systems and procedures are adhered to.
  • Contribute to a service plan for the community areas of The Campus, within the framework of an overall service plan for the site.
  • Ensure that all relevant Health and Safety regulations are adhered to and a safe environment provided for customers and staff.

This position is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Work Style

At North Somerset Council, we offer a hybrid working environment based on four distinct work styles. Depending on the role and personal circumstances, you will fall into one of these categories. However, please note that during the induction period, it may be necessary to spend more time in the office to support your learning and development. We are flexible and open to discussions about your preferred working style, and if you wish to be in the office more frequently, this can be negotiated.

This role falls into the category of Fixed Worker which means you can expect to work in the following way:

  • Spends all your time in the office, due to nature of the work

The role is permanent and is 30 hours a week over a four-week rolling period.

About You

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about serving the local and wider community, and who possesses the following skills and experience:

Essential Criteria:

  • Have excellent communication skills and a passion for customer service.
  • Experience of working in a busy, customer facing environment.
  • Be able to balance work demands within a multi-disciplined environment.
  • Excellent IT skills across a range of packages including Microsoft 365.
  • Flexibility and a strong sense of teamwork.

Desirable Criteria:

  • An in-depth knowledge of North Somerset Council and the local area.
  • Experience of working/volunteering in a community-based service.
  • Experience of library, leisure and other front line local authority services.
  • Knowledge of library materials & services – books and other media.
