About the role
St Albans Museums is an award-wining local authority funded museum service that manages and operates several historic and cultural sites, including Verulamium Museum, the Hypocaust, the 15th century Clock Tower and St Albans Museum + Gallery, at the heart of the city centre.
We are now looking for a proactive, customer focused Commercial Services Officer (Events) to support the delivery of commercially successful venue hire and events across the Museums Service. This is a varied, people focused role where no two days are the same – ideal for someone who thrives in a fast paced, customer driven environment.
Working closely with the Commercial Services Manager, you will help deliver a diverse programme of venue hire and commercial events across our museums. From supporting weddings and private venue hire to helping develop and evaluate new commercial activities, you will play a key role in maximising income while ensuring every customer receives a high-quality experience.
You will be involved in everything from coordinating event and staffing, to managing enquiries, processing invoices, liaising with suppliers and customers, and supporting event marketing and promotion. You will also help analyse what is working well – and where we can improve – to continually strengthen our commercial offer.
This role includes some evening and weekend work and requires flexibility to work across multiple sites, with opportunities for homeworking where appropriate.
What you will be doing
- Supporting the delivery of venue hire and commercial public events across the Museums Service
- Providing a professional, friendly service to customers, from first enquiry through to event delivery
- Collaborating with suppliers, partners and contractors to ensure events run smoothly and to a high standard
- Assisting with marketing and promotion of events and venue hire packages
- Managing administrative processes including bookings, paperwork, purchase orders and invoicing
- Analysing event performance and customer feedback to help improve processes and maximise income
- Supporting staffing, training and on‑site event delivery, including room setups when required
About you
You will have experience working in events, venue hire or a commercial role, ideally within a cultural, visitor‑focused or public sector environment. You will be confident communicating with a wide range of people and able to manage multiple tasks at the same time.
You will also bring:
- Experience of developing, running and supporting events
- A strong customer‑focused mindset
- Good organisational skills and excellent attention to detail
- Confidence using Microsoft Office and working with data and KPIs
- The ability to build positive working relationships with clients, colleagues and partners
Experience in event marketing or prior work in a public sector environment would be an advantage, but is not essential.
