Tunbridge Wells Borough Council is looking for a passionate and proactive Climate Change Engagement Officer to help drive forward our ambitious Climate Change Strategy and Net Zero goals.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in how we engage with residents, businesses, schools and community groups—helping to inspire real behavioural change and deliver meaningful environmental impact across the borough.

About the role

As Climate Change Engagement Officer, you will lead the development and delivery of engaging communications and participation programmes that support our sustainability priorities.

You’ll work across the organisation and with a wide range of external partners to increase awareness, encourage climate action, and ensure our work reaches all parts of the community.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and delivering a borough-wide climate engagement and communications plan.
  • Leading on climate communications campaigns, including digital, social media, and community outreach.
  • Organising and delivering events, workshops, training and engagement activities.
  • Managing and developing the Climate Action website and content.
  • Working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to promote sustainable behaviours and initiatives.
  • Supporting grant schemes, campaigns and community projects to maximise reach and impact.
  • Analysing engagement data and producing reports and insights to inform future action.

This is a varied and outward-facing role, requiring confidence, creativity and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

You will bring:

  • Experience working in sustainability, engagement, or communications project.
  • Experience delivering events, training, or community engagement activities.
  • Strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills.

A degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent experience) is required.

  • Financial: An attractive basic salary within a clear pay structure. A starting salary of £35,237 increasing to £36,165 after one years service and increasing further to £37,092 upon completion of two years in post (subject to managerial approval).
  • Holiday Entitlement: 24 days annual leave (increasing to 27 days after 5 years continuous Local Government service) plus three additional days in December and bank holidays.
  • Pensions: Membership of the Local Government (CARE – Career Average (Revalued Earnings) Pension Scheme – Employer contribution of 19.7%.
