Shape the Future of Blaenau Gwent’s First-Ever Children’s Residential Home!

Do you have a passion for making a positive impact in the lives of vulnerable children and young people? If you're someone who thrives in a calm and focused environment, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join Blaenau Gwent’s first-ever Children’s Residential Home as a Waking Nights Children’s Residential Worker. Help create a nurturing and secure space where children can rest and feel safe— knowing that you’re there to support them through the night.

About the Role

As a Waking Night Children’s Residential Worker, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of the children and young people in our care throughout the night. This vital role requires you to stay alert and responsive, making regular checks and offering care when needed. You’ll work closely with the team to maintain a warm, secure, and trauma-informed environment, ensuring that each child feels valued and cared for.

This role offers you the chance to develop deep, trusting relationships with the children, offering them comfort and security during the quiet hours of the night. You’ll be actively involved in maintaining the home’s routine, from preparing simple meals and helping with personal care to keeping the home safe and tidy. Whether you're ensuring the property is secure or contributing to care planning processes, your work will be integral to the smooth running of the home.

Beyond the immediate care responsibilities, this role gives you the opportunity to be part of a ground-breaking service, shaping the future of care in Blaenau Gwent. You’ll receive ongoing training and development, including trauma-informed practice, and become an essential part of a team that’s committed to improving the lives of vulnerable young people.

This position requires a Professional Registration, please refer to the Person Specification for further details.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. A comprehensive pre-employment screening process will be undertaken which will include an Enhanced Disclosure with Child and Adult Barred List.

Access to a vehicle for work purposes is a requirement of the role.

For information on the re-employment and re-engagement of former employees please refer to the Council’s Pay Policy.

About you

We’re looking for compassionate, dedicated individuals who understand the importance of providing consistent, calm, and nurturing care. You’re someone who naturally creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere and who can respond to the needs of children and young people with patience and empathy. A key part of the role is ensuring the emotional and physical safety of children during the night, so you’ll need to be observant, proactive, and always ready to provide support when it’s needed.

You bring with you a deep sense of responsibility and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Whether it’s handling a late-night emergency or simply being there for a child who needs reassurance, you know how to handle challenging situations with care and professionalism. You’ll also have a keen eye for detail, ensuring that all safeguarding, health, and safety standards are met throughout the night.
