For some children, the right adult support at the right time can make a lasting difference. In Blaenau Gwent Children’s Residential Services, our staff help create safe, nurturing and supportive homes where children and young people can build trust, develop confidence and experience positive childhood memories.
We are looking for caring, resilient and committed Children’s Residential Workers to join our team. You may already have experience in residential childcare, or you may be able to bring the right values, skills and life experience from another caring, education, youth work, health, community or support role. What matters most is your ability to build relationships, stay calm when things are difficult and see the potential in every child.
Every day in residential care is different. Some days are about school runs, activities, laughter and celebrating small achievements. Other days are about offering reassurance, consistency and emotional safety when a child needs it most. Through all of this, you will be part of a service that is committed to helping children feel listened to, respected and supported to achieve their potential.
Post available:
- x2 34 hours per week on a permanent contract. You will operate a 1 on / 2 off shift pattern. The 14.5 hour day shift runs from 07:45 to 23:15. Staff working this shift will receive two 30-minute unpaid breaks.
- x1 16 hours per week on a permanent contract. The post consists of four 4-hour shifts per week, working Monday 4:00pm to 8:00pm, Wednesday 4:00pm to 8:00pm, Thursday 4:00pm to 8:00pm, and either Saturday or Sunday 12:00pm to 4:00pm.
About the role
As a Children’s Residential Day Worker, you will work directly with children and young people to provide care, support and guidance that reflects their individual needs, strengths and outcomes. You will help children with day-to-day routines, education, hobbies, health appointments, family time and social activities, while contributing to care and support planning, recording and review processes.
You will help create a warm and homely environment where children can feel safe, develop independence and take part in decisions that affect them. The role involves practical care, emotional support, activity planning, promoting positive routines and responding calmly and professionally to challenging situations. You will use a trauma-informed, relationship-based approach and work in line with safeguarding requirements, regulatory expectations and Council policies and procedures.
This is a role where the small things matter: being there when a child gets home from school, encouraging them to try something new, helping them manage difficult feelings, or simply being a consistent adult who does what they say they will do.
About you
You will be someone who genuinely wants to make a positive difference to children’s lives. You will bring warmth, patience, empathy and emotional resilience, together with the ability to build trusting relationships while maintaining safe and consistent boundaries. You do not need to have had the same career path as everyone else; we are interested in people who can show the right values, commitment and willingness to learn.
You will be confident working as part of a team, able to communicate clearly with children, families, colleagues and partner agencies, and willing to continue developing your knowledge and skills. You will either hold, or be willing to work towards, the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Children and Young People), or an equivalent qualification recognised by Social Care Wales. Registration with Social Care Wales will also be required within the required timescale if you are not already registered.
