Job Vacancy: Child and Family Mentor

Location: Christchurch Church of England Primary School

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: Band F - £28,598 - £31,022

Closing Date: 13.4.2026

Are you passionate about breaking down barriers to learning? Do you have the empathy, resilience, and creativity to support children and their families through life’s challenges?

The role will be full time hours of 36 per week and 40 weeks per year.

Christchurch Church of England Primary School is looking for a dedicated and experienced Child and Family Mentor to join our nurturing and dedicated team. This is a pivotal role designed to support our pupils’ Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) and to foster strong, supportive relationships between home and school.

As a Child and Family Mentor, your primary focus will be providing direct support to our pupils, unpicking their challenges and barriers and creating bespoke support to enable children to flourish. You will work in a variety of ways to motivate and challenge our children, including 1:1 mentoring, counselling, and tailored group activities. Beyond the classroom, you will take on a vital safeguarding role as a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). This involves attending Child in Need (CIN), Child Protection (CP), and Team Around the Family meetings, ensuring the safety and well-being of our most vulnerable pupils through diligent information sharing and collaboration with outside agencies.

Building strong family partnerships is central to this role. You must be able to communicate sensitively with parents and carers, leading family learning sessions and parenting classes to secure positive involvement in school life. A significant part of your week will be dedicated to leading the drive for improved attendance and punctuality; you will be required to monitor trends, hold attendance panel meetings, and work creatively with families and the Local Authority to ensure every child is in school and ready to learn. Additionally, you will work with our Teaching Assistants and inclusion teams, sharing your expertise in SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) and attendance support.

We are looking for a highly organised professional who possesses an excellent understanding of safeguarding procedures and the EMARF referral process. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate with empathy and clarity, building trust with families from all walks of life whilst maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality. You must be adept at record-keeping, ensuring that interventions are monitored and impact evaluated to inform future support.

As a proactive team player, you will work closely with our SENDCO, Leadership Team, Teachers and various external agencies to provide a holistic support network for our children. It is essential that you are committed to the personal growth of our pupils and that you are willing to support and promote the unique faith life and ethos of our school community.

Why Join Us?

At Christchurch, we believe that a child’s emotional well-being is the foundation of their academic success. We pride ourselves on being a community where every individual is valued and supported. By joining our team, you will become part of a dedicated staff body that is committed to continuous professional development and making a tangible, lasting difference in the lives of our families.

Our school has a strong reputation for helping employees to develop, identifying potential and ensuring everyone in our community flourishes. We are excited to be appointing a new colleague to this important role and supporting them to become part of our school community.
