Our strong sense of pride propels us forward with brave and innovative thinking, making our aspirations a reality and delivering for our people. It’s why we’re a double award-winning 2023 LGC and MJ Council of the Year - the first council ever to have won both awards in the same year.

Join an organisation where you will be able to make a real difference to the lives of our residents and the future of Barnsley. You will also be a key member of a high-performing, inclusive team that works with honesty, integrity and respect.

    Your role:

    • Lead the strong and effective administrative function of the Chief Executive’s Office, in a fast-paced environment where every day brings new challenges and opportunities for growth.
    • Manage relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including our Leader’s Office, place partners, government agencies, community organisations, and local businesses, to foster collaboration and drive positive change.
    • Provide direct policy support to the Chief Executive and lead the organisation of high profile visits, events and conferences.
    • Lead and manage a small team, including the Chief Executive Support Officer and National Management Trainees.
    • Proactively manage the Chief Executive’s diary, communications and correspondence, with a solutions-oriented and responsive approach.
    • Deputise for the Head of Chief Executive’s Office, Policy and Corporate Performance where appropriate.

    What we offer:

    • The opportunity to work directly for our Chief Executive, known for their excellence and leadership within Local Government.
    • A supportive and collaborative work culture where your contributions are valued, and your ideas are heard.
    • Varied and interesting work that will challenge you and enable you to make a positive impact every day.
    • Opportunities for professional development and advancement, with access to training programs and mentorship initiatives and the ability to build your network across the Council and the wider region.
    • Competitive salary and benefits package, including flexible working arrangements and generous holiday allowances.

    Requirements:

    • You are a proactive, responsive and flexible individual, with a passion for driving positive change within the community.
    • You have exceptional organisational abilities and attention to detail, with the capacity to manage multiple priorities effectively.
    • You have proven experience of managing office functions including correspondence, diary management and events.
    • You possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain productive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
    • You have demonstrable experience of policy development and a strong understanding of policy issues across local and national government.
    • You have a Level 5 qualification (or equivalent) in a related discipline.

    Deadline: Friday 19 September 2025

Interview date: Monday 29th September 2025, in person only.

This is a unique opportunity to work at the heart of the organisation, influencing decision-making and driving strategic initiatives. You’ll be part of a forward-thinking team committed to excellence and innovation in public service.

If you're ready to make a real difference and be part of an award-winning team, we want to hear from you.
