As a Casual Deputy Registration & Ceremonies Officer, you will play a vital role in delivering statutory registration services to the community. The postholder will be responsible for registering births, deaths, stillbirths and marriages in line with legislative requirements, statutory procedures and guidance issued by the Registrar General.

You will ensure the accurate maintenance, security and safe custody of all registers, records and indices, and undertake the registration of marriages across local religious buildings and approved marriage venues, providing a professional and sensitive service to customers at all times.

The role also includes responsibility for the receipt, recording and banking of money, in accordance with the Council’s cash handling and financial procedures. You will account for all secure stock and income on a monthly and annual basis, ensuring that both secure and non-secure stock is managed effectively and ordered from the General Register Office in a timely manner.

In addition, you will support the wider Local Registration Service by undertaking administrative and operational duties as required, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to maintaining high standards of service delivery.

Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.

About you

The successful candidate will be confident in dealing with members of the public in a polite, professional and sympathetic manner, particularly in sensitive situations. You will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain the dignity and professionalism required when supporting and delivering registration services and ceremonies.

You will be computer literate, with the ability to competently use Windows-based systems and spreadsheets, and will pay close attention to detail when following procedures and processes. This includes accurate financial calculations and reconciliations, ensuring statutory and operational requirements are met at all times.

The role requires the ability to work effectively as part of a team, alongside the flexibility to support the wider service as needed. You will either have knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire, an understanding of statutory and procedural requirements relating to the registration of births and deaths, ceremonies, and the taking of notices.

This is a public facing role so you’ll need to show off your fluency in speaking and writing English.

Applicants should hold GCSEs or equivalent experience and be available to work flexibly. This includes covering weekday hours between 9:00am and 5:00pm as required, as well as weekends and occasional Bank Holidays on a rota basis. Application Process

Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore applicants are required to declare all unspent cautions and convictions; and also any adult cautions (simple or conditional), and spent convictions that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2020). A person’s criminal record will not in itself prevent a person from being appointed to this post. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.

On occasions, we may close a vacancy early due to a very high number of applications being received.
