Are you a passionate art historian with a talent for bringing masterpieces to life? Sutton College is looking for an Art History Facilitator to lead a dynamic learning programme that combines classroom-based discovery with immersive field study.

This role offers a unique opportunity for collaboration. We invite you to work alongside us to co-design a suite of courses based on your subject specialisms. Whether your expertise is in the Renaissance, Modernism, or contemporary movements, we want to help you build a curriculum that inspires our adult learners and makes the most of London’s world-class cultural institutions.

The primary goal of this role is to provide enlightening and inspiring art history education in a relaxed, accessible setting. You will bridge the gap between academic theory and the physical artwork, helping learners appreciate the historical and aesthetic significance of works housed in the UK’s leading galleries and museums.

Course Structure & Delivery

We offer a flexible, hybrid delivery model that you will help shape. A typical course suite consists of an on-site 2-hour introduction at Sutton College, followed by a series of 3-hour gallery visits.
You will have the flexibility to deliver the core curriculum in one of the following ways:

  • Pre-Visit Lecture, a 2-hour talk held at the college to provide the historical context before the gallery visits commence.
  • External visits may include (at your discretion)The National Gallery, The British Museum, The Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A).
  • Other relevant galleries or collections that align with your chosen specialism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborative Course Design: Work with the college team to design engaging “course suites” that showcase your expertise and attract diverse learners.
  • Expert Instruction: Facilitate high-quality, 2-hour classroom sessions that encourage discussion and critical thinking.
  • Off-Site Leadership: Lead 3-hour guided tours of major galleries, acting as a knowledgeable expert and managing group safety in public spaces.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive environment where adult hobbyists feel comfortable sharing their views and asking questions.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A degree or equivalent professional background in Art History, Curatorial Studies, or a related arts discipline is preferred.
  • Industry Knowledge: Deep subject knowledge is preferred. While prior teaching experience is an advantage, we are primarily seeking individuals with strong industry expertise. We are open to discussing how your unique background in research or the arts can be applied to this role.
  • Planning Skills: Ability to structure a narrative that connects classroom theory with “in-person” gallery observation.
  • Confident and clear communication skills, with the ability to engage a group in both a quiet classroom and a busy museum.
  • Team Player: A collaborative approach to work; you will be part of a supportive community of facilitators.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for making art history accessible and exciting for adult learners.

This is a fantastic opportunity to curate your own teaching schedule and share your passion for art in the world’s most famous galleries. We value your expertise and look forward to building a curriculum with you that enriches our community.
