The Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Allocations Team Leader to join our Housing Service. This is an important role leading a small team responsible for delivering the Council’s Housing Allocations service and Choice Based Lettings scheme, ensuring that homes are allocated fairly, transparently and in accordance with legislation, statutory guidance and the Council’s Allocations Policy.

In this role, you will lead and support a team of Allocations Officers, oversee the Housing Register and Choice Based Lettings processes, manage complex and sensitive cases, and work closely with Registered Providers, partner agencies and internal departments to maximise housing opportunities. You will also play a key role in monitoring service performance, responding to appeals and complaints, and helping to develop policies, procedures and service improvements.

We are looking for a confident and knowledgeable housing professional with experience of working within housing allocations, lettings or a related service. You will have a strong understanding of relevant housing legislation and guidance, experience of supervising or managing staff, and the ability to make sound decisions in complex cases. Excellent communication, organisational and partnership working skills will be essential, along with a commitment to delivering a high-quality, customer-focused service.

Key Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working within Housing Allocations, Housing Registers or Choice Based Lettings services.
  • Experience of supervising, leading and developing staff.
  • Strong knowledge of Housing Act 1996 Part VI and housing allocations legislation.
  • Experience of managing complex housing cases and making defensible decisions.
  • Experience of handling reviews, appeals and complaints.
  • Experience of using housing allocations systems, preferably Locata.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Registered Providers, partner agencies and internal departments.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and decision-making skills.
  • Commitment to delivering a fair, transparent and customer-focused housing allocations service

Skills & Experience

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in Housing Allocations, Housing Register administration or Choice Based Lettings.
  • Experience of leading or supervising a team and managing performance.
  • Experience of operating and developing housing allocations processes and procedures.
  • Experience of managing complex and sensitive housing cases, including making decisions in line with legislation and policy.
  • Strong knowledge of Housing Act 1996 Part VI, statutory guidance and housing allocations best practice.
  • Experience of using housing management and allocations systems, including Locata or similar software.
  • The ability to analyse information, solve problems and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships.
