This is an incredibly exciting time to join Tower Hamlets Youth Service. A key priority within the Tower Hamlets Council Strategic Plan is to transform and improve services for young people in the borough. We are ambitious about ensuring that all young people in the borough have access to a diverse range of youth work opportunities, activities and support through the delivery of a high-quality youth service.

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity to recruit three full time Adventure Sport Coaches within Young Tower Hamlets (YTH).

The Sport & Adventure Learning Team within YTH offers a range of exciting, engaging adventure learning activities to young people in Tower Hamlets including canoeing, kayaking, indoor rock climbing, mountain biking, inclusive cycling, BMX, skateboarding, skating, artificial caving and archery. The team also manages the borough's Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) programme, which includes the management and delivery of DofE Expeditions.

These roles will have a focus on the delivery and coordination of indoor rock climbing which includes GCSE PE Rock Climbing, NICAS Climbing and Bouldering, community events and youth-based sessions. Along with a focus on the delivery of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme, including the management of lowland DofE Expeditions. We are looking to recruit three people with each person having a focus on either rock climbing or other adventurous activities within our adventure learning programme or DofE delivery including walking expeditions.

In this dynamic role the Adventure Sports Coach will:

  • Lead on delivery and developing rock climbing, including GCSE PE and NICAS
  • Lead on safe management and delivery of The DofE including Expeditions
  • Support the Adventure Sport Coordinator and team with coordination and delivery of the wider Adventure Learning Programme
  • Deliver high-quality outdoor activity and sport sessions and programmes to the local community via day-time sessions with schools, local community groups and youth groups, community events and open-access youth sessions.
  • Support and lead on delivery and development of the DofE programme, including training, expedition planning, and supervision.
  • Act as an instructor and mentor for young people, ensuring they achieve their DofE goals safely and successfully
  • Complete appropriate planning, monitoring, risk management and evaluation of sessions, off-site visits and expeditions.
Role Requirements
  • National Governing Body qualified, in one or more adventurous activities with priority given to rock climbing and DofE Expeditions, e.g. Climbing Wall Instructor and/or Lowland Leader Award
  • Holds an appropriate Outdoor First Aid qualification or work towards achieving within 6 months of appointment.
  • Experience of working with young people in an inner-city environment.

We have fantastic transport links – Tower Hamlets Town Hall is directly opposite Whitechapel Station, which is a minute away. Whitechapel is an interchange station which serves Hammersmith & City, District, Overground, with quick access to central line DLR and Jubilee lines. We also have the Crossrail Elizabeth line with links to Canary Wharf, Shenfield/Abbey Wood/Heathrow and Stratford, which is the best-connected hub in London.
